Forums - Nintendo - Honest Discussion - Nintendo E3: What went right and what went wrong?

Right: A new notable game got new footage or was announced or whatever every five or so minutes. The Direct was under an hour, yet it had almost as much good stuff as Sony's 2 hour conference.

Wrong: The Wii U does not need a new Donkey Kong Country. Retro needs to work on a "hardcore" game. And yes, I know that DKCR was hardcore. I mean "hardcore," like some MMO shooter or something that screams "8th gen console!"

I was honestly expecting a Western IP from Retro. Nintendo has an aresenal of family friendly IP's. They need to expand their ''mature'' audiences and I feel that X with Monolithsoft is a step in the right direction but yeah, Retro I was expecting something new and fresh from you :(

It's actually pretty simple.

As a software publisher, Nintendo had the best presentation of all. Their games blew away everything I saw from any other single publisher.

As a hardware producer, Nintendo failed horribly. Horribly.

good: a must own game every month.
Bad: X and Bayonetta not this this year.

quoted for the truth.

Good: X, Mario Kart 8

Bad: Super Mario 3D World...

The biggest wrong for me was release dates. The console should have been released this winter.

you know what went right with nintendo? The one thing they didn't mention and the one way and improvisation on stage could've helped. IT'S 300$. I was seriously considering going xbox1 this generation ... then they announced a 500$ pricepoint. Gaming should not be only for the rich, i shouldn't HAVE to have internet to play a game, and if i'm going to pay 500$ for a gaming machine i'll get a low end gaming pc. At least i can upgrade that.
What else went right? they're releasing mariokart8, pikmin 8 AND marioworld 3d this holidayish season. When was the last time we got that much love for nintendo at once? Not to mention the support titles they have in windwaker, donkey kong and w101. Plus assassins creed and rayman from ubi. That's alot more in one window of time than i EVER remember on the wii.
Not only did they show us what we're playing THIS YEAR, they showed us that great games are in the pipeline. X, Bayonetta and, last but not least, the one game that gave me my wow moment this year... smash bros w/ megaman! 8/10 from me this year.
What went wrong? Mega man was the biggest surprise they had, There's no way i'd pay 60$ for any of the said support titles. I think the new mario looks fantastic... but was the poorest presented mario i've ever seen and that's important when you're coming off of one of the most revered modern platformers of all time. The one thing i think everyone wanted in the back of their heads was and exclusive 3d party blockbuster and that didn't happen. I suppose there's still time.

that's my take

Not enough games, and people setting their expectations way too damn high.

It was an okay presentation and there was definitely room for improvement, but I expect to see more news coming up in the next couple of months. By the end of the year this pessimism will go away, I hope.

I agree with this, they specifically said they wont do a press conference and would only show games coming later this year and early 2014. They want to continue doing periodic Nintendo Directs so I think we should compare this to the other ND and not to E3 press conferances. Im sure we will get another ND between Aug-Oct that has further details on these games then in Jan/Feb do another big ND showing new upcoming games.
