Initial opinion at the moment is teetering around the low 8 range. Just a few minor things irk me about the gameplay and graphics, the soundtrack is often inconsistent and I was not impressed with the majority of the new tracks, but the retro tracks were transferred well. I'll be putting 2 player online to the test tomorrow when my brother comes over. I might just ignore battle altogether as I haven't been hearing the best of things.
Shoot, I tried to get it but my local store sold out.
I played around with the demo though, and I swear I could see the 59fps issue that Digital Foundry mentioned immediately. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it started I couldn't stop noticing every 1 second it skipped a little. I wish Nintendo hears about this and fixes it in an update.
I picked up the game earlier today at the GameStop and I'm impressed with the game. The game plays great and looks great. One thing that I am furious at Nintendo for is ruining the N64 version of Rainbow Road. They took out most of the Chain Chomps and put only a few in fixed places. The Chain Chomps are supposed to be on the track attacking karts. Other than that, the game itself is great and maybe could use some updates later down the road.
Got the game today, played for a few hours, very awesome. I love the additions and crazy tracks! I laughed at the nod to Wreck It Ralph with the candy level. Good stuff! Also, 2 player online against other racer mode? Sick! Now I can race against my wife next to me AND people online. So awesome!

weird. Playing on a 47" LG, zero jaggies. Maybe a crappy HDMI cable?

Looks gorgeous on my 32" TCL.
There are jaggies here and there, but they're not numerous or prominent enough to ruin the beauty of just about everything else.
Looks and sounds great, tracks are nice (still have plenty to unlock) and the different vehicles/components noticeably affect driving (which is also tighter than MK7).
Everything is excellent except for battle mode, which is unfortunately my favourite part, I can't believe they messed with the arenas and battle modes/options (at least have an option for stock battles dammit!)
Mesmerizing game. Haven't had such fun since Super Mario Galaxy. Truly a blast, it looks gorgeous, plays tight and everything seems balanced now, even the freaking blue shell.
