Is that a bad thing? NSMBWii made a killing.

It is still a lazy effort compared to the other 3D Mario games.

I don't see how they were going to top Galaxy anyway. Super Mario Universe? That's writing themselves into a corner.
After a departure, I have no issue with returning back to basics.

And back to basis is in escence 3DWorld because it looks somewhat similar to SM64. Problem is that not only it feels like a copy paste from 3D Land, but also Nintendo forgotten about presentation. They could not top Galaxy in mechanics and gameplay, but presentation doesn't have an excuse.
There are other options, like form example similar to 3DWorld but collect starts in the same way than Banjo-Kazoiee with jiggsaws that don't pull off you from the world every time you collect a jiggsaw. Make it more open explorable worlds.

I think the issue stems from the focus on multiplayer. There are other ways it could be done, surely, but EAD Tokyo believes they already have a solid formula in place because of 3D Land, and all it needs is multiplayer to be the icing on the cake.
The result is nothing particularly new, but certainly something different than Galaxy, and an improvement on 3D Land. Now, what I wonder is how large the levels are going to be, since 3D Land's were pretty tiny. Either EAD Tokyo needs to make lots and lots of levels with more variety, or have significantly larger and longer ones than before.
At any rate I agree with you on the presentation. They seem to be operating on the KISS method this time around, which is not going to be appealing to everyone. And you have no idea how much I'd like to see some Galaxy throwback levels in the game.
