I guess, it's just hard for me to both play competitively and have fun.
This is my natural tendency:
Step 1: Pick 1 or 2 really fun characters.
Step 2: Play with them all the time and get better.
Step 3: Notice that I'm suddenly winning all my matches really easily.
Step 4: Get bored.
Step 5: Pick new characters to have fun with.
Step 6: Go back to Step 2.
The result is that I stop playing with the people I was originally best with (Metaknight, Marth, Pit...etc) and become much better with other characters. That's why I was able to trounce your Marth with Game'N'Watch with 2-3 stock remaining that night. Of course, then when I get into a duel with the older characters I find that I've lost my edge with them. Still had enough of an edge left with my Pit to tear yours apart a while back though it was probably a fluke.
In order to become really dangerous competitvely I would need to pick 1-3 characters and play them non-stop. In order to have the most fun, I need to play with different characters all the time. I pick fun. ^_^
