Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Avalanche: Microsoft's cloud power advertising "is misleading at best"

Full article here

Rashid Sayed: Microsoft believes that the Cloud will make the Xbox One more powerful over a period of time. But there are certain hurdles given that everyone doesn’t possess a high speed internet connection. Do you feel that this is simply a reason to justify an always online environment?

Linus Blomberg (Avalanche CTO): The cloud functionality is pushed as a marketing tool to compensate for the less favorable hardware specs. I understand why they feel they need to do this, as the specs on paper aren’t necessarily representative of the actual performance. But the way it’s presented I feel is misleading at best. It’s just common sense that sending data over an internet connection isn’t even remotely comparable to sending data over a high-speed internal memory bus.

Of course it can be used to perform high-latency computations, but it won’t really increase your FPS or anything like that. That is not to say that the cloud functionality isn’t an advantage, it’s a great advantage! It offloads the burden of running a backend infrastructure for connected games, which is a huge win and opens up for very interesting game designs.

Pretty much anyone with a basic knowledge of computers would know this. Of course there are people who will believe anything they're told, and no amount of debunking will prevent that.

Oh wait what happened to people saying MS paid them to say positive things about Xbox One?

From day 1 it was clear that this was a marketing tool. Some people believed it would improve the performance of the console or it's games. That was and is clearly wrong.

Didn't these same guys say that cloud processing was very useful for them with their open world games?

Xbox One's cloud-side computing is one area that gives Microsoft's console an advantage over PlayStation 4, Avalanche Studios' chief technology officer Linus Blomberg has told VideoGamer.com, despite PS4 featuring more impressive 'raw power'.

Discussing the next-gen console alongside studio head Christofer Sundberg, Blomberg said that the console's ability to compute processes on the cloud is "definitely an area where the Xbox One has a step up over PS4, and it opens up for many interesting things.

"It's perfect for open-world games like ours as it enables techniques to make the game worlds more alive and social, such as persistence and asynchronous multiplayer features," he continued. "We are already using server-side computations in our PC hunting game theHunter, so that's nothing new for us as a concept. But Microsoft's solution may allow us to do this more efficiently and to a greater [extent]."

Xbox One's architecture is said to allow developers to off-load non-latency sensitive processes to the cloud, freeing up system resources on the console.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

I think they are still saying that, just for background tasks.

They're saying it's gonna help their game run better on the system in some way, yet to be seen how.

The link in the OP is addressing that the cloud is not gonna be able to decrease the difference in power between the PS4 and the Xbox One like some would have believed based on the way Microsoft worded it during their conference. They add that it's more of a marketing tool.

It's funny that they first come out and promote the tech themselves and now all of a sudden are bashing how Microsoft is promoting it. Make up your minds already.
