Forums - Sony - Sony could possibly stop you from playing used games

If any of the console manufacturers chose to go DRM-free the third party publishers would likely pull away from developing for them to protect their own interests. And a lack of games would mean lack of sales for the console itself (as we've seen repeatedly over the years). So its quite natural for there to be a DRM implementation of some kind. I'm unsure why anyone would expect anything different?

that is an online drm...i would need to connect to the interent for that to work and Sony has stated you can play the ps4 OFFLINE. im talking completely offline...meaning used games would work because there is no authentication that can go on if you are playing single player

You can require authentication via codes over phone ala Windows/Office.

Yes, but it needs online to register with the company, so no one else can use the said products authetication code again.

Everyone knew it was coming but Microsoft jumped the gun on everyone. Low and behold everyones favorite companies EA and Activision stand beside them and EA drops online passes. No one trusts EA and no one with half a brain trusts Activision as far as policies and consumer integrity are concerned.

The trouble is, I think those people with less than half a brain might make up the majority of the game-purchasing market (present company excepted!)

EDIT: Bugger, forgot to hit the "quote" option lol

1 - Companies dont have numbers on console gamers for piracy, they have numbers on used games. They dont make their pricing more competitive because they want to nickel and dime you for every cent you have mostly being EA and Activision.  They have numbers on PC gamers piracy. Gamestop has its drawbacks but it also keeps gaming going strong because you can use your games as currency with cash to buy newer products on the market.

2- Sony allowed EA to use online passes because its their game and so would Nintendo and Microsoft as well as PC. With the advent of online communication also allowed for relationships like such to happen. Who intiated paid online gaming? Microsoft. Who allowed Activision to hike up the price of online? Microsoft. Who implemented DRM into their console for ALL games so third parties wouldnt have to? Microsoft. MS is the corporate american yes man to all of those companies and Ive been saying it for years. They all agree on the issue.  Finally they prove it and you still argue.

Microsofts E3 better be stellar.

1- Companies have the numbers for PC and 360 illegal downloads, from the beginning to the end of the gen. They can see if DRM reduces the number of downloads, which is the point I'm trying to make.

2- And how that changes Sony's situation? Like I said earlier, it's not like Sony will go to EA and say "Don't put Mass Effect 4 on the PS4 because it has DRM". Microsoft might have started everything (although I would like actual proof), but Sony follow suit. Sony didn't stopped 3rd parties (they did online passes themselves) and that won't change now.

If what you said is true that MS started all those things, then yes, it will make MS the worst, but it doesn't make Sony any better if they do the same.

Sony has no DRM on the PS4, Period which Yoshida has already said but that answer is not good enough for you guys. If the DRM is implemented it will be initiated by third parties. As I said third parties have been prepping for this via online clients when you load your games into your Xbox, Wii U, PS3 or PC.

What Sony needs to do is point out exactly how third party DRM will work on their console which is obvious by now that it would be an online client because if Sony doesnt lockdown the console they must do it themselves. Some people just want Sony to be as bad as MS no matter what they say.

And that's exactly the point I made when I first quoted you. If all 3rd parties do it, that means all games (minus 1st parties) will have DRM. We are all clear that Sony won't use DRM themselves, but 3rd parties won't think the same way.

The other point is that Sony isn't doing anything to stop 3rd party publishers (for now at least). Sure MS is worst, but Sony isn't the white knight of gaming either.

All Sony and Nintendo need to do is stay out of it and keep this between publishers and consumers and if the consumers dont respond with dollars it was all for nothing. Sony said it themselves that they are with the consumer but they are also with the publisher. MS has made it loud and clear they are not with their consumers at all. After Sony said that its kind of obvious they respect their consumers more than MS especially after the response at the beginning of this gen when many of their consumers switched to MS for their multiplats.

A couple of things to note here:
- Patents are just patents and most of them sit there without any use. Some do get used, though, but saying someone is going to use their patent because they have it is just wrong. Everything gets patented these days so no big deal here.
- Sony has stated they won't be requiring any online check-ins on their part.
- Sony's patent won't require an internet connection, which makes it much less harsh even if it does get used.

Right now, it seems Sony is playing their cards in a very customer-friendly fashion here and there's not much reason to attack Sony at the moment. If they do end up using some anti-customer policies, go ahead and talk about it because if they do, they'll deserve all the negative feedback they get and probably even more, but that seems unlikely based on what we know. So there you go: Sony hasn't done anything wrong yet and doesn't seem like they're going to do either so watch your words until then, please.

Oh come on....

Stop saying Sony does not have any DRM. They said "it is up to the publisher"; and guess what, they are a publisher... :)

The only thing they said is that they are not offering a framework to the game publishers.
They never said they do not intend to use one for their own games. So far everything is just assumption and wishes.
