Lets assume Sony or Microsoft never entered the business. These are the caveats I'll add to the dicussion:
- The Sega of 1990s remains largely what is was (ie: Yu Suzuki, Yuji Naka, Sonic Team, and all the various divisions stay together). Sega has a rough financial patch for a while but recovers because there's no Sony/MS around to suck up marketshare.
- Nintendo never ventures off into "casual chasing" territory as it would be unneccesary, they only went that route because Sony/MS cornered the "hardcore" player.
- Technology advances at roughly the same rate, Sega adopts things like online play first and Nintendo begrudingly follows.
Do you guys think the industry would be better or worse off today if this was the case?
