Yes, I dislike the labels as well. But there is a big difference between people like my mother who bought a WiiU but will never buy anything else and you cannot deny that the typical gamer clearly votes to MSony in the home market. That's just the way it is. I can argue my face blue, but the fact is the greater majority of people I know by a large margin (and like that anyone here knows) owns/plays/prefers either a PS360 over a Wii... and globally between PS360 they are statistcally a tie.
Nintendo won the hardware sales race but -and this is a huge J.Lo but- they lost the 3rd party support, which was in a downward spiral since...N64 ?! and I'd say the Wii helped put a tomb stone there.

If by "typical/general gamer" you mean the Mountain-Dew -chugging stereotype, I guess. But I prefer to insult that segment by simply referring to them as the "hardcore." That way, even they can't pretend they're anything but a minority.
If we're talking objectively then the wii won. Highest sales, highest profits.
For me personally ps3 won by providing the best value for money and the some of the best experiences this gen.

No, I mean the typical gamer. not core or hard-core or any other stupid label.
Gamers by large have easily chosen PS360 over Wii. Wii was a smash hit early for everyone and especially the casual gamer which is clearly a different segment. Then no 3rd party support came, Nintendo also began focusing on next-gen, the casuals just said meh and the gamers moved to almost completely owning a 2nd system (a ps360).
You know I prefer nintendo by a large margin, but its blatant that Wii was not the "gamers" preferred console when looking at the whole generation. PS360 won that title. That doesn't mean Nintendo didn't sell the most and clearly made the most money.
I think this is also apparent when considering one of the many reasons WiiU is not taking off. The gamer is cautious due to what happened with Wii.

Bull. Or are you suggesting that the "typical gamer" largely sat out the first half of the generation, and that the Wii sold only to a newly-emerged "casual gamer" market?
| jlrx said: It is obviously the Wii, and you don't have to take into account just the number of consoles. Your "profit" section is also highly inaccurate, you can't call it a profit and then also call it revenue. Did Sony make any money selling the PS3 at a loss? No, they can't count as a revenue until they sold the console at cost or greater, same for Microsoft, so in the 7th generation, which company profited more from their console? We already know it was Nintendo. |
Your post has a fallacy in bold above. But I think you meant to say PROFIT, and not revenue.
If sony sold a PS3 for 600 dollars, they earned 600 dollars in revenue. Now if the system cost them 900 to make, that would be their expenses. Leaving them with a net LOSS of 300. Assume the cost of the system was 500, that would leave them with a net PROFIT of 100. Either way, revenue = 600.

That being said, I fully agree with you that the OP titles section 2 as "profit", yet almost exclusively talks about revenue. From what I understand (never actually scrutinized the numbers myself) Nintendo won the profit crown by a landslide early on. What might make it closer, however, is how much money Microsoft brings in from Xbox live (which believe me is an absurd amount). Sony did not do too well last generation in terms of profit early on and mid cycle. Now they are doing much better, just in time for PS4. Hence the announcement by Sony they don't plan to lose [as much] on console sales this time around. They can't afford to just in case the console takes too long to ramp up again, like ps3 did.
| RolStoppable said: No, he is saying that the typical gamer chose the Wii early on, but then moved on to the PS3 or 360. Since 2007-2010 is a shorter period of time than 2011-2013, the victory gets handed to the HD consoles. |
Ah. Well then. Carry on.
