Forums - Nintendo - Smash Bros on 3DS and Wii U was a terrible idea

The Wii U desperately needs system selling games, and Smash Bros would have been a Godsend... if they hadn't given players the option to play it on the much more common and cheaper 3DS.

They may have undermined one of their biggest potential hardware movers with this.

Funny, that hasn't stopped Mario Kart and NSMB from finding big success on multiple platforms...

I agree it's a terrible idea if Nintendo wanted the Wii U to recover, but I'm starting to get the feeling Nintendo have given up on their home console

I've been getting that feeling for a good 5 months now.

So you ignore all the intellectual responses that show the error of your ways. I think we all know what that means. ;)

I didn't ignore them, I asked a few pages back if it had been confirmed that the games weren't the same.

You didn't reply to them, but instead replied to another post in a way that shows you didn't read any other post at all, hence ignored. Instead of denying it, just reply to them, namely mine. :L

Also, that question has naught to do with what was being said, and it came before the posts I'm refering to so I don't know why you're bringing that up, but to answer you no they haven't confirmed this, and the games will likely be similar in the same ways all SSB games are alike.

The post I responded to was countering the fears I outlined in the OP, it was relevant. Which question in particular did you want me to respond to?

What, you're telling me you didn't read your own thread? That seems very unlikely, especially since the one post you responded to was one of the few post supporting your views, and was likely surrounded by post saying otherwise, but I'll just assume you somehow only saw that one post and move on, since who cares really. :L

Anywho, as I said already you can start with mine, which are maybe 40 or so post back.

we should probably wait until we see them in action, but I do not think one will decrease the sales potential of the other...

I read the thread, I just responded to that post because it struck a chord with my own frustration with Nintendo of late. It was a sentiment I could relate to, so I said so.

As to your first post, I care because better Wii U sales make it more likely the system will recieve support. The 3DS doesn't need help, Wii U does.

They will be different games with connectivity.
The 3ds version most likely will not lower sales of the Wii U version.

Also, saying it was a terrible idea before release, no, before we even have screenshots is a little premature.

Not really sure how you can think that, regardless of how different or similar they are. Both versions will sell well of course, but it's undeniable that each version would sell better if the other didn't exist, since there's definitely going to be people only getting one version.

Well firstly, let me say again that the decision to put SSB4 on both consoles came before the Wii U even released. It was the 3DS that was underperforming at that time, and they probably assumed the Wii U would get more third party support than it did and not have delays on it's launch window games like it did.

Secondly, by the time SSB4 comes out, I think it's safe to say the Wii U will be consistently selling decently enough, what with Mario Kart, Super Mario, Wii Fit, among other games and a possible price cut.

Thirdly, you need a constant stream of games to consistently sell consoles, so yes the 3DS can always use more games just like every system. Look what happened to the Wii after Nintendo stopped supporting it, look at the Wii U now. Infact the 3DS also had this issue, hence SSB4 on the system.

Lastly, as said many times already, SSB4 will still sell plenty of Wii Us, perhaps not as many as it would without a 3DS version, but still a good amount that should keep the system selling decently enough until the next game. Like I said in my second post on this thread, as long as the systems sell enough to keep getting supported until a new console comes out, then we as gamers/consumers shouldn't fuss over the sales as there's nothing more in it for us.

You make good points.

If the games are at least different to a degree, it wouldn't be much of a problem.

It still remains though that Smash is one of Nintendo's biggest console sellers, so the decision not to keep it exclusive, while made at a time when the Wii U hadn't crashed yet, could bite them on the bum for lack of foresight. The 3DS has third party support to keep it afloat, Wii U doesn't.
