Forums - Gaming - Is there a danger that people are giving the PS4 too much of a free pass?

And i wonder what is so confusing about leaving it up to the publisher? Its pretty self explanatory, they had the same thing in place for PS3 with having the system play international games only one publisher used it and it was for one game. Atlus and Persona 4 Arena

Theres every reason to assume it... There is no evidence to suggest it. There is no reason to assume they will follow suit,

Is this enough proof to start assuming?

The problem is that if it is "up to publishers" then this said publishers will take advantage of the situation and in the end it will be the same as the Xbone.

Nope, because the Ps3 has it too... it's called online pass. Since Sony isn't requiring online like MS there would be no way Sony could enforce this.

Ps4 can't handle used games like it sounds like that MS will handle it. I suggest you just cross that outta the OP right now. Ps4 will not require online so how do you expect people without online to register their game to their account?

One of Sony's patent's that they were awarded was for a disc scheme that included a writable section of disc.  Instead of or inaddition to the embedded chip.

The way the scheme works is that on a layer of disc would be a writable section, allowing the disc to write user information, such as an account and machine ID.  Thus, locking a disc specifically to a user and a machine.  You don't need an always online connection.  You don't need to phone home.  The user wouldn't know the difference until they bought a disc installed it to their PS4, and then attempted to install it on someone else's console.

And who says this is the same as online passes? Yoshida dodged the question. Until Sony absolutely confirms this, there's a lot of room for speculations.

You don't need online to ensure you won't be able to play used games. The disc itself can do it, the console itself (without connecting to internet) can do it. There are a lot of ways around this. There's also the rumor that says the PSN will no longer be free.

Again, this are all assumptions, nothing is set in stone yet. It might happen or it won't, we simple can't say atm.

I agree. It dawned on me a few days ago that Sony was gonna leave it up to the developers and it worries me just as much as the Xbox one. I have gamefly and I enjoy the service as well as trading and swapping games with friends so this directly affects me and my gaming experience.

I can only hope the developers have the good sense to sacrifice a few sale numbers in order to build up an audience. I mean, a gamer buying a used game today maybe become a day 1 the next time around.

I remember that old patent that isn't the first of its kind that has never been used.... which the Gamestops claims pretty much dismiss

PS4 isn't getting a free pass if they do a lot of the stuff rumored/confirmed for X1.

If it does it too, it will receive its due.
If used games it permit, the console is legit.

EDIT: I actually am thinking Sony might have a used game policy. Since they claim the PS4 doesn't need the internet they can't do it like MS supposedly is. Instead they might have the PS4 disks be rewritable and allow for the PS4 to imprint a code to lock it to the console. Not only would this allow for the ability to install on the harddrive without disk playback, but also allow for the game to be unlocked by paying a fee. It is similar to online passes, but for the whole of the game content. So say for $10 someone could unlock a game they are buying from a friend or used game store. Sure they'd need internet to unlock it, unless stores can unlock them similar to how they will be unlocking X1 games. For what this theory suggests for physical copies, it is very similar to X1, except it doesn't require internet which is an issue with X1.

Honestly, I hope they just keep things the same this gen. People are upset by online passes, but that is way more fair than any of this. Online passes target games that can take up server bandwidth and leaves single player alone. The PS4 will have everygame digital day one, just like the Vita, and Vita has seen a very promising 15-30% digital purchase rate compared to the typical 5-10% on PS3. One reason I like Sony this gen is that they have taken the approach of providing attractive optional services instead of enforcing everyone down a path. Letting consumers decide on paying for a subscription service and providing both physical and digital options, lets hope they stick with that philosophy.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Gamefly offers PC game rentals, right? Hopefully they'll be able to manage something similar with M$(and Sony?). Perhaps they'll get their own specialized "rental" discs?
