Forums - Microsoft - So, Xbox One has a Blu-ray drive

Of course $ony doesn't own bluray - the people who thought that are just... well, we know what and who they are.
To me the drive is useless for movies by now, because I already have a bdp but it's definitely good for future games. This gen it was close with dvd, nextgen will require more capacity.

It's useless for games since every game requires a full install and reportedly the discs aren't needed at all. I suppose it makes things slightly easier to install, but playing movies is the only thing that it is actually needed for

I said it's only useful because of the size, not the game itself. Of course it's only a medium to bring the content to the disk but it's also good for games as they can use the full 50 gig in size to create the games.

I just don't see why games would boom to 50GB in size. I play quite a lot of PC games and most aren't bigger than 10GB and those that are, aren't anywhere near to 50GB. Pretty much all could be done on 2 DVDs. All the reports of 50GB PS3 games were beause of lazy compression and because they put the content in multiple places on the disc to improve load times (I think, not sure how accurate this is), but the latter won't be a problem as they have quicker drives now

I suppose the one thing is that I THINK that you can play as it installs, so that might just be easier

I guess it doesn't matter, it won't be a huge cost and could come in handy towards the end of the generation.

Not surprising at all really. And yeah lol at anyone who thought Sony could stop this, although I doubt anyone ever did. The royalty Sony gets also isn't that big, but it is something. :p

I am surprised that it even can do 4k and that the box will have the ability to upscale content to 4k.

I'm not surprised at all by that as HDMI 1.4a/b already supports 4k resolution (although not at 60 Hz, so that's not viable for games) and they have a capable GPU inside (and probably a dedicated scaler chip aswell), so upscaling content to 4k is a piece of cake provided they have the necessary algorithms. Even if MS didn't want to develop those themselves they could easily license some from AMD.

Indeed. There have been av receivers that upscale to 4k for ages.

Yes but I am really looking forward of how well this can be done. I know AVRs do it since 2 years but has this ever been tested? How good is the quality?

So i guess Blu-ray wont be complete shit anymore to certain people.

I for one still find Bluray unnecessary as I do with any other disk medium. Havent had a CD/DVD/Bluray drive in my PCs for almost 2 years now and not once did I need it.

I totally understand why its there and why its necessary for the masses...but if I had a choice I'd trade the BD on my Xbox One with an SSD hard drive or something...that is if Microsoft was doing custom Xboxes lol.
