If they do that it will be met with anger and despair. Out of that there will be those who accept it and those who reject it. Plenty of confidence will be lost in Sony and MS will sell more this gen. The backlash will cripple PS4 sales and further damage Sony as a whole. One of the main reasons I like Sony this gen is their attract consumers through compelling optional content approach. If they do this than what of the PS3 and the Vita? No one will move to the PS4. The concept doesn't make sense and if they restrict online play for those consoles then you can bet the lines at Gamestop to trade in those consoles will be out the door. I personally would demand refund on the PS plus I have, start a petition and flood Sony with distressed consumer calls. I hope if the big publishers are pushing MS and Sony in this route that Sony has the balls to look at them and say "Oh you want to put in place a no used game system? Well we have one. It's called digital only" and that be that.

It worked for MS before and will work again, why won't it work for Sony? You will definitely pay for several services, namely psn+ and especially Gaikai. Yes, both are optional, but Sony wants to earn money, too, so they will most probably make a feature-bundle gamers are to buy.

What worked for MS also seperated gamers into different groups. For Sony it would be risking their consumer base and handing it off to Nintendo or elsewhere. I'm fine paying for PS+ and if I had decent enough internet, Gaikai. I won't be happy if all the cool features are tied up to Gaikai but it is better that than for them to go back and remove online play, or hell even offline play, and put it behind a pay wall. Basic online multiplayer has been universely free to play to those who purchase the software, universal except for MS who all but forced it upon consumers who wanted to buy their console.
Sony can earn money without requiring a subscription. Make a service people want and people will get it but not everyone will want the same thing so why only accept certain customers if all are willing to buy something? I don't own a gas station and make customers buy a candy bar if they want to fill their tank because of the profit margin. Sony shouldn't either.
