They are pretty much saying that they want to be the cable box of America, fuck the rest of the world, and leeching off subscription fees. Any more questions?

Take that with a grain of salt lol I remember PR people saying this gen would be the last one using a disk and the possibility of the ps4 and nextbox shipping without a disk drive.

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Unlikely in bold. They probably mean free to play games, or arcade type games that are 5-10 bucks. Etc. This is full of marketing spin.
On big budget games they can easily make it fully locked out (single player and all). Look at Diablo 3 as an example, and that's on PC let alone a fully controlled Xbox!

Your LICENSE is tied to your account. The disc is borderline worthless. You would need to log into YOUR account at your friends house to play the game. Once your friend logs into his account, he would NOT be able to play the game, even if the data is on his hard drive and/or the disc in the system. He of course, could start playing on HIS account if he BUYS the game. My guess is that will be full retail price.
Look up Diablo 3 for the full extent of what Microsoft and Sony could do here if they really wanted to.

They say the game is tied to the account. Doesnt that mean that other people with the disc can only play it with the disc and my account login? I doubt they will be able to play on theirs. If you can play the game in any account aslong as you have the disc then its alright. |
Bold is today's game model. That would be awesome, but that is NOT what they are describing. They are discribing linking your account to your license to play the game. Having the disc or not would be irrelevant.

Today's game model for Xbox is a bit different than that for digital games... 99% of the people complaining does not even realize that.
Today if you buy a game online (Arcade or On demande), it will be tied to your account...
NOW... EVERYONE on the same console (the first console you installed the game) can play it... And I'm pretty Microsoft is going to conitnue with that model; I do not why it would be different.
So basically if you have one console at home and you install the game on it. Everyone can play the game on that console.
And before clueless people are coming in and start saying that Microsoft did not "specificaly" said that; they did not for the 360 but this is just how it works.

Yeah, but now they are making a physical disc purchase the same way. Anyone who plays on the console (under that one account mind you) can play the game. But if you try to take that same disc and play it on another account, it will not play. You would need to purchase a new license for that account. Therefore, you cannot sell your disc much like you cannot sell your online download of a game.
If that is the case, you might as well download. I have a fast internet connection, so I can probably download a game faster than I could get in my car, get to to best buy and back and then rip it to my HDD.

I'm not arguing with both of you points. They are basically giving you a downloadable game on disc but the model will be exactly the same as digital games from now on. As far the trade; I think they are working on something (I have no link sorry but I ahve read that somewhere) that will allow people to sell their "used" game online at some point.
I like this idea as going to EBGames / Gamestop for instance is no different to me :)

Sounds like we are agreeing. Agreed in bold. They are moving the DISC based model to the DIGITAL DOWNLOAD model. One in the same, meaning your account is now tied to a license, disc or not.
And yes, it remains to be seen if they will back off from that slightly and offer a way to trade used licenses (since it doesn't matter if you downloaded it or have it on disc) in a market place. I would be on board with direct licensing trade (maybe ebay style with Microsoft taking a percentage cut). Might put Gamestop out of business, but whatever...
Ok so if I understand correctly
- You buy a game and need to install it on your console in order to play it then you need to activate it online to play without the disc.
- Every 24 hours you need to be online to validate the games that are in your console.
- You can play the same game with no charges on multiple accounts as long as all these accounts are on the same console.
- You can take you game and play it on a friend's Xone no problem, the gamme will need to be installed too but will need an activation if you want to play without the disc in the tray.
- If you remove the disc from your friend's console the Xone, via Live, will recognize this game as already tied to another account and will ask to activate it to play it even if the game is already installed in. Activation costs may vary from full price to publisher's discounts.
Ok so it's a bit complicated but not that complicated in the end... people need to calm down.
