Forums - Gaming Discussion - Confirmed: 3GB OF DDR3 ram in XBOX one will be used to run the OS

We've known this for months too :D

The RAM difference is pretty huge between PS4 and Xbox One.

PS4 = 7GB Fast GDDR5 RAM for games.
Xbox One = 5GB Slow DDR3 RAM for games.

It's a big difference and it will affect the games. Xbox One will be the limiting factor for next-gen 3rd party titles. It's obvious that the entertainment focus of Microsoft had a huge effect on the design of the console. Both on the specs and the apperance of the console itself. Seriously, it looks like a DVR or set-top box.

You're comparing GDDR to DDR....

GDDR is for the graphics card and DDR is for the RAM

I think most multi-plat games will then use 5GB by default as devs aren't going to want the headache of mismatched ports.

Wow not even Windows 8 uses that much RAM...this actually kinda ridiculous, but it explains why the voice commands were so fast during the conference.

8GB of Ram DDR5

1 GB used for OS.

3 gig for OS in xbox 1?

less than that for ps4 OS?

xbox 1 uses more ram ps4 doesnt due to ps4 having seperate custom prosessors doing that OS work for them?

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

DDR3 is as high as it gets for RAM.

GDDR5 is GPU ram based on DDR3.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Yah, another of the great VGKing post :) Clueless hehe
The number of OS is not really what matter. An OS is a set of functionality to do a lot of different stuff; having 3 different OS does not equal the need for more memory... And "OS", for instance the one to swtich between game and TV is nothing but a small process running...

OP: Do we know for sure how many RAM will thePS4  OS use (with the video recording feature and all that); I tend to believe something like 2GB to 3GB both will certainly consume approximatly the same amount of memory.

Yeh people keep complaring the GPU RAM to the System RAM. They both have different jobs lol

How did they get the information since Ms haven't said anythign about what type of ram or how the os used in the reveal or after. I smell Bs as its pure specualtion. I will tkae it with a grain of salt as its only true when ms says it themselves.

Yes that's the case for PC, but the PS4 only has GDDR5 ram shared with the whole system, thus why the ps4 has faster RAM for everything
