Forums - Microsoft - XBOX ONE requires a fee to play used games. And if the game is new the fee is $60!

Do we know that this is the case? Could it be that you can play it with the disc inserted without having to pay a transfer fee?

After the initial purchase the game is locked to the users account after the manditory install. The second console apparently must pay a fee. The scary part is it explains somewhat why EA dropped the online pass.

This is actually a GOOD THING.

Now you can buy a game, install it to your HDD, SELL IT TO GAMESTOP!

If you think about it, this will enable you to buy more games and it will save you tons of money.

This is making the HUGE assumption that Gamestop will still be taking in used games after this policy is introduced, or be paying you nearly as much as they currently do for used games sales. I highly doubt either will happen. I am just waiting to see how Gamestop and other major retailers or game rental service providers respond to this. This could be severe for MS if they receive backlash from Gamestop, who are essentially the ones who would be advertising and selling their consoles. It may even cause them to pick sides with PS4 if they don't have this type of restriction. I mean Gamestop's main business is used games.

Even if they do pay less than they do this gen, for someone like me who ONLY buys NEW, this is a huge incentive to actually sell my games. We still need more details though. Depending on the fee, this will either revolutionize or destroy the used games market.

This is bullshit. What if want to play at a friends house?

You stream the game via cloud to that Xbox. Unless your friend doesn't have internet...then you probably have to bring you're console or HDD with

it's probably not always on. It's probably like steam which requires it to be activated.

And like steam the games will be cracked.

If you wanted to let your friend borrow it couldn't you just give him your account? and you play games on his? Thats what I do with my brother on steam all the time.

If the Xbox reads your Blu Rays and can tell if its used or not how can it not be online? I just read a report that says the game locks up with Xbox Live and has manidtory installs.

If it's like steam, it uses the steam service to authenticate the install. And then it doesn't need to be authenticated anymore if you want to play in offline mode (Which also means no multiplayer). It would require online, to activate. But, not necessarily to play.

I have no idea if that's what xbox is using. But, that would be my guess, because console digital distribution and PC boxed and digital follows that model mostly.

The disks are a medium to bring the content to the console, but the console does not play the game from it.

If they stop me from bringing my games to my friends house for game night they can screw themselves.

Right, to keep you from just installing it on all your friends' Xboxes. But has it been confirmed that the second console won't still work as long as you have the disc inserted without paying the fee?

As long as they allow multiple accounts per machine you should be good. It'll almost definitely be a hassle, though.

I'd like to know how they implement this technically. Vouchers (CD keys, online passes etc.) aren't exactly a quick way to get playing and I can't think of any other ways right now.

Also, this alone is enough reason to kill whatever potential interest I might have had in the console. Not that the reveal itself didn't kill it...

it has to be that way, because used games still have a fee. Therefore the game is tied to the first user, which means they are going full force with the licensing agreements and are now enforcing a fee after first time users enjoy the game.
