Forums - Gaming - Which games are designed for speed running?

A recent example could be Dark Souls, as there are particular weapons, shortcuts, and other elements that allow people to complete the game rather fast, despite most players usually taking a while before finishing it due to its rather challenging and unforgiving gameplay.  Honestly, there are elements in Dark Souls that remind me of Metroid, such as fighting the bosses in different orders, accessing areas/shortcuts to progress, and so on.

When I saw the title of the thread, I immediatly thought of Super Metroid.

I hit to say Super Metroid, but I see that the OP mentioned Super Metroid lol.

I'm reading up a bit on the level design of Super Metroid and holy crap.

This stuff is awesome. Epitome of level designing right here. Really starting to appreciate this game now.

Super Metroid is great for speed-running. In fact most Metroid games work well.
Sonic the Hedgehog is made for speed-running. Just keep running!

2D Mario also works very well. It really shows in many areas that the designers considered speed-runners when they made the levels.

Lastly, Donkey Kong Country (Returns) is another must-have for speed-runners. Hard as hell but very satisfactory.

Kingdom Grand Prix, and probably the other games from the Mahou Daisakusen series.

Am I the only one thinking about Mirror's Edge?

Better late than never, they say. =P

Super Metroid is the greatest game ever made. The only flawless game I've played.

Donkey Kong Country. During the ending, Cranky Kong says, "I did this using one life and it took less than an hour." I made it my goal to achieve this on a game file and finally did, all while attaining 101% as well. My point being that the game is designed in many sections to haul ass, bouncing from enemy to enemy to blast through the levels. Fun stuff.

I second this. DKCR took it a step further by adding a Time Attack mode, and the levels once again were designed for significant amounts of ass-hauling.

I agree, but the problem with DKCR (for me) was that I hated... HATED... ABSOLUTELY FRICK'N HATED the fact that you had to shake the Wii remote to be able to do your roll move which gave you a speed boost when followed by jumping. God, I despised that design choice. That single flaw brought the game's score down at least an entire point for me. I've seen people on Youtube pull it off in tight spaces like it was nothing, but I sucked at it. I never would have been able to achieve what I did in DKC with that; just give me a good old button to hold down to run any day.

Did I mention that I hated having to shake to roll in DKCR?

You might want to install the HBC on your Wii. You can use a code which remaps rolling to ZR on the Classic Controller+. I'd never have finished the game without that code^^

@topic:

Super Mario Bros. games. ALL of them

SMB3 might be the best example, if you collect both flutes in W1 you can directly port yourself to W8.

In SMB1 you can either use a glitch to warp yourself directly to W8 from the Warp Zone in 1-2 or use the "regular" Warp Zone to warp to W6 and from 6-2 (I think) to W8 via aother Warp Zone.

Metroid Prime is pretty good for speed running. Getting the boost jump first opens up a lot of sequence breaking options.
