How about Novak Djokovic??? :)

not right now. he was a lot in the news in 2011 but this year is much less in my experience. i  hear much more about nadal the last months. he has already 6 or 7 wins this year.

Then what was she in that was not Nascar? What was her initial claim to fame?

indycar or something like that.

ah yes, that is right. I follow neither and thought they were the same thing.

@ sub......basketball player?

well, nascar and indycar are only an american thing and formula 1 is worldwide and  the most important racing series on this planet.

that's proabably the reason why  people in this thread said that some americans seem to think us-sports is the world. you think people are popular which other people outside usa never heard about but you never heard about people like messi or ronaldo.

Messi, he is a once in a generation player and is known on every continent (well, maybe not Antarctica...) with his only competition being Ronaldo right now. Honestly I'd probably have half of the top 25 being footballers.

If you say "the world" then have to include the actual world beyond own nation's borders. I'm American and I have not even heard of half the name listed (Crawford? Tebow?) so can only imagine what the other 90% of the planet thinks when looking at this.

I would put world stars but know none. Tebow is an American Football Star, and Crawford is an American Hockey star in the playoffs right now.

Tebow is in the news a lot as well. Besides that it is the same players mentioned over and over in America. They are drama queens who hog the spotlight.

Wiat, you mean Corey Crawford as in the Chicago player?  He's Canadian, but anyways I'd say Crosby or Ovi have more mainstream penetration in the current zeitgeist.  Sorry, I think a first name would have helped me make the connection.

I am an American and I can say I must watch other sources as never hear about this guy.

If you'd like to know about Messi be happy to explain why dozens of people in this thread mention him. His stats are insane and hard to say if his goals in a year will ever be beaten.  Imagine someone in NHL right now beating Gretzky's goal mark for a year and have an idea.

Another good question would be of all time. Micheal jordan? Wayne Gretzky? Muhammid Ali? Mickey Mantle? Babe Ruth? Hard to pick. I think even overseas would know some of those and have to pick them.

Pele.
