Forums - Nintendo Discussion - GameCube Vs. Wii U (Month To Month In NA)

Gamecube actually didnt do too horrible in N. America but I think Wii U will end up on top. A price cut sometime around Aug/Sept to $249.99/279.99 alongside Pikmin 3, Wii Party/Fit, Wind Waker should give a good boost going into the holidays then have Basic+Wii Fit/Balance Board and Deluxe+Mario Kart bundles for $299.99 ready in time for black friday. Keep the momentum going in 2014 with 3D Mario in Q1, Smash Bros Q2, Metroid Q3, Zelda Q4 and gmames like X, Batonetta 2, Yarn Yosh, FExSMT mixed in as well. 2015 could get games like F-Zero, Star Fox, Animal Crossing then a price drop to $199.99 with New Super Mario World and Nintnedo Land 2. 2016 is when i see Wii U slaes decline but still solid thanks to Donkey Kong, Kirby, open world western RPG by Retro, after that Nintnedo begins to focus on console/handheld hybrid "3rd pillar".

As far as 3rd party support goes, I think Ubisoft/Activision/EA(will come around once sales pick up) will support it with cross-gen multiplats thru 2015 and japanese devs like Capcom/Namco/Square will give it solid multiplat and exclusive supprot thru 2015. Overall I predict about 40-50 million Wii U sold and 20-25% market share.

Wait didn't SSB, the best selling game for the GC come out like 1 month after GC launch?

Well then no fekking wonder.

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/profile/92109/nintendopie/ Nintendopie  Was obviously right and I was obviously wrong. I will forever be a lesser being than them. (6/16/13)

Not really a fair comparison seeing as the Gamecube had Smash Bros. Melee within a month of its launch. People just need to give the Wii U time. I fully expect a Nintendo Direct at or near the time of E3 with trailers for 3D Mario, Mario Kart, Wind Waker, Pikmin 3, Wii Fit U, Wii U Party, and Retro's secret game. They'll have demos for 3D Mario, Mario Kart and Wind Waker for sure and then nearly all of those will likely release within this fiscal year....along with The Wonderful 101, Rayman Legends and a few other great third-party titles. If this coming Christmas season comes and goes, and Wii U STILL isn't selling well even WITH a 3D Mario or Mario Kart title, plus ALL of those other games to help flesh out the library, THEN we can worry. But until then, it's just a matter of patience I think.

Plus, either way Nintendo will be fine. Did anyone see the latest trailer for Pokemon X and Y?...confirming diagonal movement, seemingly adjustable camera angles, customizable characters, rideable Pokemon, a truly 3D open polygonal world, and much more dynamic battle animations? That plus Zelda during the holidays equals 3DS DOMINATION! Japan ALONE could keep Nintendo profitable this fiscal year just on the strength of 3DS and the releases of Pokemon X/Y and Monster Hunter 4.

Upcoming Games To Get

Definite: Kirby Star Allies (Switch), Mario Tennis Aces (Switch), Fire Emblem (Switch), Yoshi (Switch), Pokemon (Switch), Kingdom Hearts 3 (PS4), Monster Hunter World (PS4)

Considering: Fe (Switch), Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (Switch), The World Ends With You (Switch), Ys VIII (Switch), Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition (PS4), Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Remix (PS4), The Last Guardian (PS4), Shadow of the Colossus HD (PS4), Anthem (PS4), Shenmue 3 (PS4), WiLD (PS4)

There should be a cumulative added. So far GC wins by 412.000.

GameCube was also competing directly head on with the newly launched XBox with Halo and the Playstation 2 was entering beast mode with MGS2, FFX, and GTA3 all coming out around the the time the GCN/XBox launched.

The Wii U is competing against the 7 year old 360 and 6 year old PS3, both consoles are old and past their prime.

And NSMB Wii on Wii far outsold Smash Bros, so I'm not neccessarily certain Smash Bros is going to be all that much bigger than NSMBU in lifetime sales.

Smash Bros. Melee, Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin, Wave Race: Blue Storm, Super Monkey Ball, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II

Vs.

New Super Mario Bros. U, Nintendo Land, Zombi U, LEGO City, Monster Hunter Tri G

Are the notable exclusives for both consoles at this point.

NBA Street, SSX Tricky. 007 Agent Under Fire are the notable multi-plats for the GCN.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, Sonic Racing Transformed, Assassin's Creed III, Need For Speed Underground, Ninja Gaiden III: RE are the notable multiplats on Wii U.

One other thing to consider though is price, GC was $100 less than the competition while Wii U is about $50-100 more expensive than PS360 depending on SKUs. NSMBU would be a system seller at $200 but at $350 it needs more high quality games to go along with it.

From my source it made them 4.5 billion

I doubt that figure a lot. Profits during the GC time aren't all from GC, there was the GBA and the begin of the DS handheld gens and Nintendo never details which branch is making the profits. I think it's reasonable to assume the by far biggest chunk of those profits is from the device that sold ~80million units without competition and not the device that sold ~22million with 2 competitors.

so you think Smash Bros. will be a system seller at 350?? I doubt it but i also doubt it will be that expensive by the time it comes out anyway.

Not at all, I dont think any one game is a system seller for a $350 Nintendo console. It needs multiple games at that price to persuade people to buy it. We could see that later this year tho as by the end of the year it will have Pikmin 3, Wind Waker, Mario Kart, Wii Fit/Party in addition to NSMBU and could very well get a price cut.

It's also a completely different market to back then.
