Forums - Gaming - Square Enix presents new strategy: spend less money on HD games and more on Mobile games

That is embarrassing.

They should ask Quantic Dream for some tips.

"Square Enix new strategy: How to stay irrelevant"

fixed it according to my opinion.

There's a difference between being relevant and making money.  This will keep them afloat, but how will that make them what they once were?  What if they shed Eidos off?  I'm sure I speak for many when I say I don't want those crappy Final Fantasy games they've been making for the iOS platform.

Square will never *ever* be what they were, in my opinion. FF8 started it all, 9 was the last hope, everything after was not Square anymore to me (at least concerning FF). I liked the remakes for the DS but every new FF game just disappointed me. Let them port every nes-snes-game to ios/android, I don't care. And also take a look at this ridiculous thing: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=554202&highlight=fantasy

Final Fantasy 8 didn't start it, Final Fantasy 12 did cause that's when they stopped listenning to fans and started listenning to themselves.  Point is, them focusing on iOS/Android development isn't going to help them stay relevant.  That's just doing, as Badgenome pointed out, what they've been doing already.  They spent hundreds of millions of dollars building a studio in the U.S. just for mobile development.  What happened?  They got shut down.   "We all want Final Fantasy games on iOS" said no one ever.

I'm sure there's a decent return on investment in such things, particularly ports of old games. It's pretty hard to lose your ass in mobile development since the games are so cheap to make. But unless you hit the jackpot Puzzle & Dragons style, there's not a ton of money in it, either. Certainly not enough to maintain a company as huge as Square-Enix.

This is what I'm trying to get at.

I get it, they want to become one of those small game developers that nobody cares about.

The last line is sickening. That means they still think that Japan should receive Japanese games and the West the western ones. It means they have no plans for Type-0 or Drakengard 3 outside Japan, that they don't give a sh** about Bravery Default or DQVII unless Nintendo foots the bill. This logic of shutting regions in their presumed own "culture" (like this would be completely uniform) and denying cultural diversity and exchanges is absolutely disgusting and recessive.

Japan has never been known for trying to promote their culture or their language.  That's how the japanese are.  They are a culture that holds others so high above themselves that they just don't understand why anyone would be interested in theirs.

Interesting, nothing to make anyone excited. Their final fantasy games are so over priced compared to most of the same quality on andriod platforms. Most games of that quality are $5.99 on andriod not $15. Especially when you can buy a emulator from google play store, or get a free one, and then proceed to play them all for free easily. SE makes me sick more than any other developer on mobiles with their prices.

Does Apple have Emulaters at the Apple store?

And, yes, I bought both of their terrible FFs. In 13 and 13-2.

Since it seems like its going to take forever for Square to remake Final Fantasy VII, why not do a moderate "refresh" on the game on a lower budget for 3DS?

Like Ocarina of Time 3D, give the graphics a little bit of a refresh, but otherwise leave the game the same.

IMO that's an easy 4-6 million worldwide for Square-Enix.
