I didn't see this posted anywhere on here so I though I would share. It seems on Wednesday, May 8th Penny Arcade launched a Kickstarter project to raise money to restart their podcast Downloadable content. Nothing to unusual here. Except for the fact that the goal amount was a mere ten dollars. This has caused quite a stir in the community as many feel this is shady or a scam. The detractors are saddened by the fact that Penny Arcade's fans are practically throwing money at the project. Some have made comments, "I can't wait to get rich so I can get people to give me money." Finally, there has been a large reposting of Penny Arcade's old comic on Kickstarter projects. What are your thoughts into the issue?

95% of gamers don't know they are noobs, the 5% who do won't be noobs for long

Around the Network

The entire thing really looks like a joke to me. Let's see what happens when it finishes.

I'm iffy on the whole KickStarter thing. I see a lot of bands/musicians that have money asking for projects to be funded while offering dumb things like a thank you on their album or "studio hang time". I don't, however, oppose small developers asking for a funding to get some games in the making (Road Rash being the only example I can think of right now). But this, I feel is just a mere joke but those comments seem to be fitting to a lot of musicians I see taking advantage of this whole craze.

It's disgusting.

In gaming too there's been a few questionable campaigns by established studios who already have enough money for a game in development, using Kickstarter only as marketing.

I don't see what the big deal is. Let people spend there money how they want 2. If fans are willing to throw money at a project, then why the hell not have a kickstarter funding program. No one's forcing anybody to donate. I personally think kickstarter is genius from the marketing and business perspective. I don't know if it's a win from a fan perspective, but if people are willing to donate, then I guess it is.

$80,000 plus pledged of the $10 goal. I guess we can call it a success. I agree with the notion that people are allowed to spend their money the way they want.

Penny Arcade got 500,000$ to remove some of their ads for only a year. Now they're asking for more money just to do a podcast? This is dumber than than the Tropes vs Women thing where a women got 150k to make a simple web series. PA set the goal at 10$ because they know their fan base will line their pockets with cash. I don't ever watch Penny Arcade and I don't intend to start.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

It's a comic. At least be aware of what you're criticising.

They also have shows on there, I do know it's a comic.

Don't care, people are allowed to spend money how they want.
