Also not surprising, if your talking about now then sure but a week ago or hell, before that 100k+ FW was overly optimistic. You can see several threads on it.

Splatoon doing 80k+ FW  is quite surprising going by reactions and predictions over a week ago. 100k+ now is definitely surprising for many people (except for those like me and Hiska, as well as a few others who believe this game will be huge)

Sorry to butt in here, but I don't understand what you're hoping to achieve with this argument of "weeks ago expectations were lower".

Weeks ago, Splatoon didn't have an aggressive marketing push in Japan.  Things have changed.   If you look at some of the stuff Hiska posts on GAF, there's a lot of advertising going on for the game in Japan, and as such, sales potential has increased.

Look at Destiny.  Similar situation.  Received a big advertising push from Sony, sold like ~ 140k FW (between PS3 & PS4) in Japan.

So yeah, it's doing a lot better than everyone expected, but I also suspect a lot of people would've expected it to get the amount of advertising that most non-Mario first party WiiU games get (i.e. not much).

The thing is... the game started to win massive points on comg and beasting on amazon after the demo, not because the marketing, the marketing was there before. in the moment people played the game they fell in love, and that wasn´t even a real demo or beta, it was a test for the servers...

SM3DW did 99k, had push. So what? Did you or anyone expect Splatoon to be bigger than a main 3D Mario FW, especially one that released end of nov? Marketing/advertising helped out tremendously but that doesn't change what i said about "weeks ago expectations were lower"

Besides we had plenty of hints stating Nintendo wanted to make this a big game pre direct/demo. Its not my fault many predicted low sales, some even stated below 40k FW in japan.

I get what you mean but thats what predictions are for and its not like all these predictions come from last year or even months ago. All of these come from within 2-4weeks. There are many threads, i can post a few if you like.

edit: Also its not really fair for predictions or to be surprised now, especially when we are getting estimates of how splatoon will do. Hiska posted that retailer said highest pre order in the month/Blogger said Pre orders exceed XCX/etc. Obviously not going to surprise now because we are getting hints that splatoon will be selling quite over at least 80k FW.

Thats the point of predicting, before all the info comes in. Look at XCX many of us thought it was going to hit 90k-130k FW. It had push too, but we used the predictions from before not after we knew what was going to be the answer.

Did it?  I was under the impression the aggressive marketing only started within the last couple of weeks... which is when pre-orders started increasing.

In fact, I seem to remember people posting on here that they were surprised pre-orders hadn't picked up substantially on the first day after the testfire.

Isn't the fact that you're mentioning November just helping my point?  The game released close to a major holiday, so people held off on buying in the first week because they were getting it for Christmas? :P

No, I didn't expect Splatoon to be bigger than a 3D Mario FW, but you seem to be missing my point entirely.  I'm saying that Splatoon seems to be being seem as if it isn't a major title for Nintendo, when the marketing push they're giving it is shows that it is.  And while it's all well and good showing that it's exceeding expectations (which it is), I'm willing to bet that the majority of people who predicted probably saw it as something Nintendo wouldn't treat so importantly (which isn't a silly assumption on their part).

And no, thank you, I would not like to see any prediction threads, because I feel like I've seen them posted far too often already over the past few days :P

"reply to your first comment"

Your mistaken, it was the direct pre orders didnt move but intill the demo (testfire) what was driving pre orders at the start and huge too. Marketing came days later.

"I'm saying that Splatoon seems to be being seem as if it isn't a major title for Nintendo" Yes it was, its been stated for awhile now they were going to push it as a huge franchise and wanted it to be the next MK+SSB. Many people called it out for it. Reason for it not having mario in it or simply because its a new IP.

As for showing you the threads, i wasnt talking about FW prediction only, there are many worse threads downplaying the game... but i'll leave it at that.

"I'm willing to bet that the majority of people who predicted probably saw it as something Nintendo wouldn't treat so importantly (which isn't a silly assumption on their part)."

Exactly, it is silly on their part and was accounted for their predictions! We are in agreement here :0

Nop, people (included me) was dissapointed because the day of the Direct the game earned 0 points and the day after the Direct was at 0 too, then the Demo came and it jumped like 5 points on that day, it is the demo (supported by the big marketing now) the main reason of the hype.

Oh yeah, it was the direct.  My bad!

While it's not expected to do quite as well as the others, it will not be surprising to see it doing well over 100k.

What is quite as well as the others? Mk8/SSBU?

I was referring to MK8 and SSBU. It's unreasonable to think it could do those numbers but it's in a middle ground between Pikmin 3 and MK8 (imo).

As Kresnik stated, the situation has changed for Splatoon so predictions made before had very little bearing going forward.

That´s a lame reson to justify the bad predictions before. Now everyone that predicted 15 or 20k fw could say "I didn´t know about marketing", well, that is part of the prediction sorry.

I don't really care. I didn't make any FW predictions. We're talking about COMG comparisons to see where it may fall, not an epeen "Who was right" situation (don't see the relevance of it tbh).
