Cliff Bleszinski praises Sony for 'really embracing' indie movement, calls out Microsoft 'nightmare'

  • Posted May 11th, 2013 at 11:23 EDT by Kyle Prahl

The name Cliffy B doesn't exactly conjure reverent images for PlayStation diehards. After all, the guy is responsible for creating one of Microsoft's biggest franchises--Gears of War--and was an influential figurehead at Epic Games, a studio whose Unreal Engine 3 was notoriously lackluster during PS3's early years.

But now that Cliff Bleszinski has left Epic Games in pursuit of other career avenues, he's free to speak candidly about the industry he's grown alongside for 20 years. In an interview with Engadget, he had some choice words to share about Microsoft's treatment of indie developers and how Sony is doing it better. "I have a very good relationship with Microsoft, but [there are] a lot of TCRs you'd have to go through," he explained. ". . . all the stuff you'd have to go through to get your game on Xbox Live Arcade, or even issue updates on; it was a nightmare."

Meanwhile, "it feels like Sony's embraced a lot of that vibe thus far, as far as indie games go and whatnot." He continued: "I feel like Sony's really embraced that vibe, and [the] homebrewed and homegrown movement that's really taken over, and what a cool thing that somebody in his garage made as a mod that is going to go viral tomorrow."

Sounds like Cliff and Shahid Ahmad would have a lot in common.

And yet indie games are doing just fine on the Xbox 360... what nightmare is CB actually talking about. Ever since he left Epic his views have been a big wierd...

The only reason some indie developers solely chose Sony is because there is too much competition on the 360. The PS3 indie market is not very strong, so their games get a greater chance of generating publicity. Sony isn't doing anything MS isn't doing.

And ignoring this story.

Games can and should tell stories and share ideas through their mechanics. This is the intrinsic element of the medium and this is how experiences should be crafted in video games. No company does this as well as Nintendo and their echoes from the past.

I agree with Dr. JimmyRustles and echosfromthepast and the first sentence from foodfather.

Yeah the tons of Indie games on Xbox marketplace must really show how bad MS is treating Indie devs. Lol I can't even take anyone seriously that says that.

Sony has opened their system to indie developers as we have heard from GDC. They created the pub fund to fund development of games on their system from indie developers and now they have waived the update fees they use to charge. These are all great changes and they were necessary in order to not only compete with MS but with other open systems that are coming to the market like the Ouya.

I do have to say that its funny that Sony finally gets it about Indie developers while MS has been doing this for years but Sony is getting praise as if this is a new concept.  The only thing I will say is that MS does not promote indie games like they do their XBLA games which is a small slight because they could be using that area for their next XBLA game to bring forward.

MS is rumored to be doing the same thing and also there is the rumor that the Windows Store will be coming to the nextBox thus opening the console up to just about anybody with a one time 60 dollar fee and no fee for updates. If the Windows store does come to the Nextbox and MS allows any developer to put their games on the console then this would be the most friendly development system out there. The WIndows store will give developers at least 3 target systems to put games and apps on MS devices.

While Sony move is good, MS has the ability to blow the doors off of console and game development if they tie their Store to all of their devices and bring down the barriers for all game development.

There is a chance for a lot of crap to come out of the store but if MS get their rating system and other ways to promote the wheat from the chaff this can reduce the amount of garbage that rise to the top.

Since you agree with that sentence, explain how that is.

There are plenty of indie games on XBL it has a special section just for indie games it actually has more indie games then XBL arcade games.  Also some of the XBL arcade games can also be classified as indie games.  The best selling XBL arcade game Minecraft is what I would consider a indie game.  If they wheren't selling good there would not be as many of them on XBL.

That doesn't mean there is a lack of competition on PSN, though.

Added some to my previous statement that pretty much all I have to say about the subject.  Cliffy B is saying a lot of stupid stuff since he left Epic I guess he wants to become the next Micheal Patcher.

So I guess we should ignore all the game developers that are talking about this situation and believe the guys at VGC.
