Forums - Gaming - SpiritualChartz: What Games Have Impacted You on a Spiritual/Religious Level?

GamrConnect is home to a large and diverse community, full of folks with different backgrounds, lifestyles, and world views. For many of us, these parts of us are shaped by our spiritual beliefs, whether that comes from religious doctrine or personal spiritual ideas that guide our life. These beliefs help shape who we are and how we see the world around us, and as such, permeate even the smallest of things: including our playing of video games!

So, VGChartz community, has a video game ever impacted you on a spiritual or religious level? Has there ever been a certain part in a game that has affected you or reminded you of a spiritual or religious aspect of your life? Hopefully we can have some interesting discussion about this! ^_^

NOTE: This is not the place to be debating whether God/gods exist, or how your religion, belief system (which includes Athiesm and Agnosticism), or values are better/superior to someone else's. And it certainly is not the place to take petty pot shots at someone's belief system or world view. We've got dozens of threads for that debate/discussion... and I will not hesitate to hand out warnings or bans if you want to derail this topic. So keep that in mind before you post. ^_^

well spiritual/religious level isn't really my thing, so I guess I'd say the game that probably hit me the most emotionally was probably that famous moment in FF7 since I'd never played an RPG before where a main character had died like that. Those kind of moments always get me like the similar one in VC.

Other than that the patriotic ending of MGS3 really got to me too as an army brat.  Moments of self-sacrifice particularly when you know you'll be hated for it in the end are some of the most beautiful stories in my opinion.

...

none, until now.

None, really. Though you could argue that the TellTale "Walking Dead" game helped give a good example of what it means to love someone else and doing the right thing when all is against you.

One game that I can affected me on a spiritual level is actually Silent Hill: Shattered Memories for the Wii/PS2/PSP (Played it on the Wii).

*Spoilers for the game follow*

During your time in the game, you play the role of Harry Mason, who is looking for his daughter, Cheryl. In reality, this is all taking place in Cheryl's mind, as she's struggling to realize that her father has been dead for years and she's created this perfect father figure to help her deal with her loss and pain. The ending (there are multiple endings, but I came across the "Love Lost" ending) is bittersweet because she finally lets go and accepts the reality of the situation, but at the same time, she must now deal with a scar of a missing father that will never return.

This part of the story really caught my attention and affected me in a pretty big way. In the Christian Bible, God is refered to as the Father multiple times, so Cheryl's story of her searching for this perfect father figure was really intriguing. In the end, he is only a ghost in her mind, a band-aid to help the hurt of losing him all those years ago. But with the Christian world view, God is the perfect father (Matthew 5:43) who wants a relationship with us.

It's a pretty interesting juxtaposition of ideas. One showing the pain and hurt we all experience in an unperfect world, and in specific case a missing father. The other showing a Father that will never leave nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). It really got me thinking, and really affected me in a way I didn't think a video game could. Very cool moment. ^_^
