If they aren't taken any huge loss then the price of the console will probably be between $450 and $500. I can see them doing $400 but that's the absolute lowest.

He isn't saying the PS4 won't be sold at a loss, he is saying it won't be so huge that it causes an overall loss that quarter! Duh!
Also the Wii U is already losing to the PS3 so I don't see how a PS4 releasing is gonna help it lol...
surely it can't be higher than £400 over here,i mean £450 would be really pushing it so it will probably be that, microsoft can undercut sony over here pretty easily i'd expect
i doubt $500 machine will win over the usa market, have to be a few sweetners
| pezus said: This could still mean that they'll be selling PS4 at a loss btw. Just that they don't expect to lose $400 on every PS4 like they did with PS3 . A $100 loss per PS4 and software that makes up for the initial loss is the way to go. |
$100 loss? That's insane, you will need to sell 14 third party games or 4 first party games per console to recover that money (based on this, for first party it will be $27 per game and $7 for third party games (platform royalties)). Although I don't know who gets the $7 from "Returns", most likely the publisher, which in that case it will be 3 first party games.

Strong sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360 are not going to help ANY of the next generation consoles.

Not really. You can sell poorly and still make profit. The Gamecube was in last place but Nintendo still profited that generation. |
I have never seen Nintendo announce profits for handhelds and home consoles separately, so personally I think the profits were due to GBA,DS not the Gamecube.
ps4 999 US dollars lol. jokes aside, i think it's more like they CAN'T take huge losses on the hardware.

True, but I think (hope) Pezus was just throwing out an arbitrary number. They are most likely looking to get very close to break even, or better yet, make a profit.
The problem is you really don't want to come out and say that because people want everything for cost. They want to think they are getting the best deal possible. I still think Nintendo is full of it when they say they are losing money on the Wii U. I think they are heavily inflating their R&D associated costs, opportunity costs, etc. when they make that claim because it makes them sound good (like they do it for the people). A lot of those numbers can be massaged.

nitendo didn't take a loss on gamecube hardware and it did sell a lot of software. it's okay to say most of the profits came from gba but gc itself was also making money.
