So they aren't planning a 'major' loss, which obviously means they may still take a smaller loss on the PS4 initially, which I really wouldn't find surprising. I can understand selling a product below cost, as long as it's not an enormous amount below cost. I'm guessing PS4 will launch at $499 and they'll be taking a $30-$50 loss on each console, which is still significantly below the loss they were taking with the PS3 at launch, I belie

It is projected to only cost around $450-$500 to make.  Expect a $400-$450 price point (Depending on if MS does end up selling their console for a rediculous $500).

So in your small and very naive world, you sell your goods at (or more precisely, below) manufacturing costs?

Toddifer is quite right in his assessment, over the long run. However, the initial batches of consoles usually carry a much higher loss, depending on the planned time span (and batch size) the manufacturers want to recoup costs. My estimate is that initial PS4s carry a production cost around $550-$600 (always keep in mind these complex SoC are completely new and untested so there is quite a risk of extremely low initial yields).

I'm really tired of those people here who say "anything over $299/$399 is too much". For both XBox and PS4, a price of $600 would be more than fair (considering a similarly equipped PC costs you more).

Um yeah that is how this business works...  The PS3 cost $800+ to make and they sold it for $600.  Thus selling a $500 console for $400 isn't nearly as big of a deal...

when you're selling your own buildings and firing employees, it is a BIG deal. sony is nowhere near the same situation as in 2006, they can't afford a big loss on ps4.

Granted, I don't see Sony wasting their time and resources with a $100 loss this time around either, yet that's exactly what they did with the PS1 when they were in even worse shape then they're in now.

If they aren't planning a loss then Microsoft has an advantage as they are capable of winning the price war with subsidization.  The PS4 is looking more and more like the gamecube to me.

LOL! Ps4 will sell a minimum of 3x more than the gamecube.  It's not that it looks like it to you. Its that you wish it was. Huge difference

Nah Xbox is looking like the ps2, ps4 is looking like the gamecube, and the WiiU is looking like the Dreamcast. Only the games released this holiday season can turn the tides on this battle.

I'm curious to understand how you were able to draw this conclusion (if you're being for real, that is).

Microsoft is like Sony before the 6th gen hit. They won the last gen (Nintendo is in its own class) and will start the new gen with a good fan base and a console noticeably more powerful than the previous but still affordable for the everyday man. Xbox is already synonymous with video games. Sony is in the same position as Nintendo was before 6th gen hit. They won the 6th gen but lost the 7th but instead of trying to do something different they decide to keep going with more power like Nintendo did. Only the Sony fans will stick to them. And Wii-U is hilariously underpowered and released before the others just like the Dreamcast was and only the most delusional die-hard fans are buying the console. No real games are worth playing on it besides a hand full of first party titles just like how Sega's Dreamcast was back in the day.

Unless Sony has some hard hitting titles they will be in second place again next gen. Wii-U is looking like it'll be Nintendo's swan song for the home console business with no real chance of sucess in sight.

Sony is no where near in the same position Nintendo was. The Playstation brand is huge in Europe and Japan and has a respectable foothold in America, even in their current situation I do not see Sony getting Gamecubed with the PS4. So far they seem to be doing everything right with the possible exception of the price and, most likely it will not be the same situation as the PS3.

Also what is with all this Dreamcast hate lately? I'm getting tired of it.
