Japan is pretty much just important if you wanna sell JRPGs and stuff that appears to be borderline pedophilia.

So yeah, I'm not completely out of line. Their culture seems to be okay with what western cultures consider pedophilia.

Which is why their games sometimes do things you wouldn't see in a western games. Like seeing a young girl's panties or maybe having Big Boss sleeping with an underage girl.

The US is already doing that with the 360. It's the reason why it's selling so much there.


But at least they didn't sell as bad as 360 did in Japan, it just pisses me off how they are biased towards westernized products yet we aren't

to microsoft it really is.  the question is what will they do about it next gen. and for how long.  although they could easily make xbox japan its own entity and write it off as a loss. japan will never support the xbox at a 1/4 of the percentage americans support the sony's and nintendos.  americans want what they want and buy it.  i am not some buy american dweeb but it is what it is.  as cited before the xbox goods are in the american dooky pile.  if americans had that same sentiment against the others the other countries wouldve went bankrupt a long time ago

Well, I must say 2 things about this discussion:

1 - As many people said before, the Western market is far more important than the Japanese market (around 14 times bigger, regarding home consoles' videogames). And, if we consider that Japanese people almost don't adhere to Western products, then I would say the difference is 26 to 1 (at least, that's my estimate for Western videogames). So, yes, we could say Japan is significant. Perhaps France or even Spain is more relevant to the Wester industry than Japan.

2 - I don't agree with the title. Microsoft invested on Japan like Nintendo never did with the Western (taking into account the size of each market and company business). Microsoft did in Japan much more than they should...until 2010. That was when they realized the same investment volume on the Western market would produce much greater results and thus Japan was a wrong bet. The outcome was a better Christmas season than PS3 (even though PS3 was outselling X360 on that year) and much closer results in the following months, while in Christmas seasons they were actually outselling Sony's console. This shift in the Microsoft's strategy is the only reason why X360 is still in front of PS3 in total hardware sales. Who would blame Microsoft for that? They did for Japan what Nintendo never did for the Western.

VIDEO GAMES..... not just HW sales.... heck japanese market is almost as big as europe market as a whole.... lol to the japan is not relevant...
look at the current top 5 games of 2013...

Luigi mansion as one.. more than 1/3rd of those sales came from japan....

4 and 5..... DW and Animal crossing is japan numbers only..... and still made it to top 5...

and japanese market is not relevant????????????? damn.... i wanna smoke whatever you are smoking

Where do I say it is not relevant?  HW wise Japan has become the third market and in the future it looks like the market will shrink while the most other markets will grow so yes the Japanese market will be less important in the future.
