If this actually happens, is it going to be the first time a PlayStation home console actually gets the superior version of multi-plats?

Oh you mean you have forgotten that the PS1 generally had much better versions of multiplats than the Sega Saturn?

Did you look at the graphics of Resident Evil on the Saturn, or maybe Wipeout vs the PS1?

Saturn had better 2D ports mind, but who cared about them....(at the time).

RE1 was notably better on the Saturn with extra content, higher poly models, and noticeably better textures. Tomb Raider was mixed. Otherwise I agree in general.

Actually that generations console with the highest graphical prowess would probably be the 3DO. It was nothing less then a monster. Adjusted for inflation we are talking about a machine that would cost over a thousand dollars as of today. So no Sony didn't have the superior hardware, and yes the 3DO probably shared a few games with their rivals. Not that many mind you given the incredibly small install base. The company and their console were often offered up as evidence that the PS3s initial retail price wasn't sustainable in the least.

Anyway there you guys go. You don't have anything to argue about really.

So can you tell us please the specs for the 3d-hardware in 3do? max. amounts of polys? texture-mapping? mip-mapping? filtering? gouraud-shading?

The mips-cpu was way more powerful than arm, also higher clocked. ram is the same...

No, psx was the first.

And what multi-plats were better on that?

Only games I can think of that were multi-plat during the fifth gen were things like Road Rash (better on N64) and WipEout 2097 (better on Saturn).

It way a long time ago though, so if I'm forgetting something feel free to remind me.

edit: A bit of research has told me that PS1 shared multi-plats with:

N64: Resident Evil 2; Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series.

Saturn: Croc; Resident Evil 1.

I couldn't tell you which was the better version of these games to be honest.  If you told me it was PS1 then I wouldn't know any better!

Games better on psx than Saturn:

WipeOut (2097)

Resident Evil 1

Tomb Raider

All released Fifas

Battle Arena Toshinden

Die Hard

These are the ones I instantly remember.

2d-games were better on saturn but almost every 3d-game looked way better on psx.

Going by rumors they'll be so close you won't even be able to tell the difference unlike some of the fiascoes that happened this gen like Skyrim on the PS3.

No it wasn't. I played both versions, RE1 on the Saturn had a lower resolution, and inferior shading. Content not really relevent as that's more of a business decision.

The extra content was laughable. I know it because I had this game. The models looked worse than on PSX like every other 3d-game. I loved my Saturn (that gamepad...) but 3d-games were worse. Fact. The lack of being able to render transparencies made almost all games look worse on Saturn. And Tomb Raider was mixed? What was better with TR on Saturn?

They're higher poly regardless, if you found them to look worse that's a subjective concern. Extra content is about as laughable as any pluses for RE1 on PS (fire transparency and FMV resolution) so there's that. Draw distance on TR iirc.

I'm not debating PS was better at 3D which I already conceded, and I far prefer my PS, just setting the record straight here on a common misconception on RE.

No offense! :) I read somewhere else that the poly-models were better.

I think it would be best to post a comparison video so everyone can make his own opinion:

Perhaps this is also a good start for a nice yt-video-series - they compare a lot of games!

The 3DO was designed around a entirely different technical philosophy. It was built primarily as a FMV device rather then a 3D gaming device. Now personally I never understood the attraction so many had for that kind of presentation, because to me it all looked fucking hideous. That said I also understand that I was in the minority with that particular sentiment. At least at that time. The console I played at the time was a N64, and I only felt pity for FMV whores. What can I say I never understood how a near photo realistic cinematic made a game look good to so may. When the rest of the game was filled with sprites.
