Forums - Sony - Yoshida: PS4 Version of Multiplatform Games Must Be Considered the Best

No, psx was the first.

And what multi-plats were better on that?

Only games I can think of that were multi-plat during the fifth gen were things like Road Rash (better on N64) and WipEout 2097 (better on Saturn).

It way a long time ago though, so if I'm forgetting something feel free to remind me.

edit: A bit of research has told me that PS1 shared multi-plats with:

N64: Resident Evil 2; Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series.

Saturn: Croc; Resident Evil 1.

I couldn't tell you which was the better version of these games to be honest.  If you told me it was PS1 then I wouldn't know any better!

Oh you mean you have forgotten that the PS1 generally had much better versions of multiplats than the Sega Saturn?

Did you look at the graphics of Resident Evil on the Saturn, or maybe Wipeout vs the PS1?

Saturn had better 2D ports mind, but who cared about them....(at the time).

Wipeout 2097 better on Saturn? Pardon?

Well don't make thoughtless comments like this then...

If this actually happens, is it going to be the first time a PlayStation home console actually gets the superior version of multi-plats?

...actually I just realized you had a question mark there.

...oops.

...Hangs head in shame.

But yes, Resident Evil looked better on the PS1 by a country mile as did Wipeout, Wipeout had a lower resolution and Resident Evil lacked gourad shading, which made the characters look like they weren't just bright uniformly lit characters no matter the placement of the character.

...Just did a quick google and actually found an RE1 PS1/Saturn head2head, from my memory the differences were much more glaring than they show there. Obviously lensoftruth staff don't know what shading is, also characters have less polys on the Saturn

EDIT...

Another one of top of my head is Doom, that ran like a dog on my Saturn, we're talking frame rates of about 15fps at all times. Even lower during busy bits, the PS1 ran it at a relatively smooth 25fps or so. Saturn version also lacked transparency making things like those "invisible" demons look absolutely ridiculous like a big load of mesh walking around obvious from miles away instead of a nasty last minute shock.

Here's an intresting link where people are discussing the PS1 vs Saturn multiplats...Lot's of idiots who don't have a clue but arrogantly sound like they do but a fair few people who know what they're talking about too

Goodness me, calm down!

I was wrong about WipEout.  I just looked at a youtube video comparing them head to head and yeah.  The saturn version looks fine, imo, but the frame-rate is hideous.  Perhaps it was the N64 version I was thinking of?  Like I said, it's such a long time ago that I was reading about this that I don't really remember.

I was just curious, anyway, hence the question.  Obviously the last gen of multi-plats have been generally inferior on PS3; and although again I am not certain on this matter I would've assumed that the PS2's lesser power/more difficult architecture would've made multi-plats inferior last gen too.  So barring something like this that I didn't know about the PS1 v. Saturn, I just thought it would've been an interesting change for the future.  But I guess that it's a return to roots instead!

Sorry mate, get a bit carried away sometimes :)

In actual fact though if you add up all the 2D games, the Saturn may just pip the PS1 in terms of multiplats...

so my post was all for nothing...calm down, yes I should!

I believe so as well. Hopefully Yoshida won't pull a Reggie on us.

Playstation = The Beast from the East

Sony + Nintendo = WIN! PS3 + PSV + PS4 + Wii U + 3DS

@fillet/Kresnik

Actually that generations console with the highest graphical prowess would probably be the 3DO. It was nothing less then a monster. Adjusted for inflation we are talking about a machine that would cost over a thousand dollars as of today. So no Sony didn't have the superior hardware, and yes the 3DO probably shared a few games with their rivals. Not that many mind you given the incredibly small install base. The company and their console were often offered up as evidence that the PS3s initial retail price wasn't sustainable in the least.

Anyway there you guys go. You don't have anything to argue about really.

It's a good goal to strive for, especially after the problems with some PS3 multi-platform titles. I can't think of a reason in the world why PS4 games shouldn't be on par with 720 games, at the least, which is enough for me.

Also, a lot of people hold up Bayonetta as an example here, but I personally think that particular game should be thrown out of consideration. The PS3 wasn't nearly as much to blame as the inept team Sega used to create the port.
