Forums - Nintendo - If Nintendo Sells 95 Mill 3DS's + 35 Mill Wii Us, Is That A Dissapointment Or No?

The 3DS might be considered a failure, but only if it has a long life. If it is discontinued in 2016 or something, then those are great numbers.

For the Wii U, that would be a big flop. The Wii U needs to sell at least 50 million units of hardware lifetime to keep Nintendo relevant in the console sphere.

Getting to over 50 million hardware units really isn't as easy as people think it is.

There's only really a handful of consoles that have done it -- NES, SNES (close enough), Playstation, PS2, Wii, PS3, and XBox 360.

All of them except for the Wii had exceptional third party support, and the Wii bucked the trend by having the casual/blue ocean craze all to itself for 3-4 years.

I don't think Wii U really has either the same support from the casual market this time around, nor does it have the third party support. You can't strike out in both these areas and expect for 4-5 franchises (Mario, Mario Kart, Smash, Zelda, DKC) to drag the entire platform to 50+ million. Just doesn't work.

The 7th generation console market is about 250 million systems and counting. The market will possibly only grow in the 8th generation.Nintendo needs to gain a fifth of that to be a success. Is that not fair?

All signs point to a contraction and you're saying the market will GROW?

You're one of the vastly optimistic then.

You can't combined consoles + handheld sales.

35m consoles = EPIC FAIL
95m handhelds = Expected

35 milion isn't really an Epic Fail, especially considering that GCN sold 22million and made a profit. (And no it actually wasn't GBA. 1st party software sold enough to make back losses on hardware.)

N64 numbers should be enough for Nintendo.

Also you sure do like poking in Nintendo threads just to piss everyone off.

35m is not a epic fail? lol ok.

PS. I don't care is it is a Nintendo thread or not... I comment in any thread... a question for you 35m for PS4 is what? Fine? lol lol lol

If the 3DS sold less than the DS, that wouldn't be such a terrible thing. Mobile games have made a huge dent in the traditional handheld gaming market. It's pretty tough to convince people to sink the money on a 3DS and pay $40 for games when their iPhone is an all-in-one device that has thousands of games for $1 (or even free). If the 3DS sold 90 million lifetime, I would consider that a huge accomplishment.

On the other hand, 30 million lifetime sales for the Wii U would be quite meager. It would have to maintain its current sales trends worldwide and not manage to pick up much momentum from price drops/game launches. It would actually be quite a feat given the success of the Wii.

Of course not, 35 million for a PS console would be a disaster. They sacrificed 5 billion dollars to prevent that from happening to the PS3.

Nintendo consoles can still make profits off small userbases due to their software being highly profitable.

The 3ds number wouldnt be a disappointment. Id actually be surprised if the WiiU ever made it to those number so guess it wouldn't be a disappointment either.

95 for 3DS = "OK". 35 for Wii U = big fail. Not that it matters, they should exceed both.

So...

Wii U 35m = Fine.
PS4 35m = Disaster.

And I'm the biased here lol.
