Nintendo really lost the potential with F-Zero as it could fit really well now as a top Sci-Fi racing game and especially online.

Back to the point however it seems the top three are really Mario, Pokemon, and Zelda (in order of popularity).

Mario the skillful linear platform game, Zelda the puzzle-solving adventure game, Metroid the fast-paced action game. They are vastly different in their foundation, which made them unique and their character's iconic.

I think people have a lot of misunderstandings here.

I'm not entirely sure if you meant me and others that say the same, or used me to point to point to other's 'misunderstanding'.

I don't see how it's not. Or how else I could describe it compared to Mario and Zelda in a way that emphasizes the difference. I didn't mean to say it's like Contra or anything, but it's an action game nonetheless. The point is, Nintendo made three pillars (not like the GBA, Wii and DS of course ), which were fundamentally different. Because they were the first, those are the 'big three' .
