Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Xbox 720 will outsell PS4 and Wii-U. Kinect 2.0 will be Killer App - Opinion Piece.

I think people need to get past Kinect when it comes to Kinect 2. They are two different beasts.

First and foremost, Kinect 2 will utilize a higher resolution camera, but that's the small potatoes of it. Kinect used Primesense technology. Primesense uses a IR emitter to paint an area with IR light. An IR detector then determines the depth based on the heat signature.

Kinect 2 uses LIDAR. A small power laser scans the room using the time it takes for the light to reflect back to measure the distance. It's far more responsive, accurate, and capable of being used in both dark as well as bright (read sunlit) rooms, which is a problem for IR systems like Kinect.

This is one reason why the images that recently were posted suggesting a new look for Kinect had only a single area for a lens/camera. Kinect 2 will utilize a different type of camera (apologies as the acronym is failing me) that is capable of both receiving color as well as IR light in one sensor.

As mentioned elsewhere the response time of Kinect 2 is less than 10 milliseconds. Far less than is perceivable by a human being.

So, let's be reasonable. Is Kinect 2 going to mean FPS or RPGs without a controller? No. Certainly, as has been demonstrated this generation, Kinect 2 will be able to help augment FPS or RPGs by providing voice recognition to games, character augmentation, and even perspective change. The latter especially when used with IllumiRoom.

Thank you for this post.

Kinect 2 will be far more capable than Kinect.

I didn't even know kinect 2 will be that fast. I just know that it will be far more capable than the first kinect.

Let me correct myself.  That should read less than 10 ms.  Not less than a 10th of one millisecond.

I think that should still be fast enough.

Jega you own a Kinect, do you? What I think will happen is the casual gamers will get into the kinect 2.0 and then get bored with it and move on.

I am getting a ps4 for sure. Whether i get a next xbox will be determined by what they show at the reveal and their focus on first party games. If all i see is kinect then forget it.

Since Kinect 2 will be included with every console, I think what will happen is people will get over themselves, realize the technology has potential to improve their use of the console and gaming, and integrate it into their every day lives.

People who use Kinect on a frequent basis now, love it.  Doesn't matter if it's for gaming or otherwise.  That isn't to say the current technology couldn't be improved.  It can and it will be.  However, while Kinect hasn't necessarily lived up to the hype due to technical limitations, that doesn't preclude it from being useful.

You don't see a use it in, but to the person who can sit down to their console, and say, "Xbox Play <whatever>" and it does it, it's a useful feature.

Read my top 5 reasons again, Kinect 2.0 will benefit all gamers.
