The PS3 may even reach 100 million console systems and continue the tradition of PS1/PS2 all sell over 100 million console systems. PS3 may eventually sell more systems than the Wii and win this console sales generation. PS3 is closing down the sales gap on the Wii down to 24 million and is now roughly equal to the XBox 360 in total sales.

It will not. It would take another 4-to-5 year of the PS3 selling at current levels for it to hit 100 million, so unless the PS4 doesn't sell all that well and people opt to keep buying the PS3 instead I doubt the PS3 will make 95 million. Because once the PS3 came on the market it took that long for the PS2 to sell 10 million units.

At current levels, the PS3 is selling 13M per year despite having no price drop in years. So, at current levels, it will take 2 years to hit 100M.

And get your facts right. The PS2 sold about 50M after the PS3 hit the market including 13.7M in 2007.

At current levels the ps3 is sub 10M a year and this number will get smaller as wii u becomes more popular and the ps4/nextbox release. ps2 sold the equivalent of 36% the install base after the ps3 released. I don't think the much less popular ps3 will get close to that. 100 million is the top it could get.

No, it's not sub 10M. The PS3 + PS2 sold 15.6M last year, afterall so I question where you got your numbers from. And you're also forgetting that the PS3 is priced higher than what the Wii cost at launch. But it's funny seeing Nintendo fanboys denying what is happening - that the PS3 is moving on to be the winner of this gen.

by the way, what's the relevance of that? especially when the ps3's best year in sales doesn't even compare to wii's medium year (2010).

check the ps3 current weekly sales. multiply by 48 and then raise a little because of holydays. it would result in 8 or 9M tops and this number will only go down.

I prefer to use official numbers where we can. And in 2012, the PS3 sold about 13M.

And so far in 2013, it's sub 10M.

PS4 20-35 million

Sony has been in serious decline in the past 8 years, this is exemplified with steep declines of PS3 and Vita from prior generations.. Expect that trend of decline to continue.

Hilarious joke. Sony is in decline but yet is still selling more than the competition on a weekly basis. Expect that trend to continue when Ps4 launches. Wait... that makes no sense. On top of that Sony only sold about 105mil Ps2's by the time Ps3 released. Ps3 will be over 80mil by the Ps4 releases. It isn't as big of a decline as you think.

Correction, PS2 sold 127 million by Christmas 2007, which would be the same time period from PS3's launch until the time of PS4's release. While PS2 sold well, it seems about 50 million fewer people decided to purchase the following console in the same time frame. In addition, the same thing can be seen with the Vita, FAR fewer people purchased it than the previous consoles released by Sony.

Sony as a company is in massive decline. Their videogame segment exemplifies this. Many Sony fans expected the Vita would sell amazingly to, a year and a half later it has yet to sell even 5 million units. Expect Sony fumble the PS4 in a similar way to how they have been fumbling every product they launch, and to continue that trend of steep decline.

yeah cause Sony handhelds have always been as strong as their home consoles.  That's like comparing Nintendo handhelds to home consoles.  It's a completely different case between those worlds.  Sony leads the charts every week in home consoles by 40,000 and is still the highest priced.

LOL! if you want to be stubborn like that and spin then we won't get any 2013 numbers for another 3 months. However, I think we can effectively analyze Ps3's situation by looking at the info we do have.  Oh, and if you don't realize the significance of the Ps3 still being expensive years after launch then I don't know what to tell you. It will assure Sony room to drop the price and sustain sales for at least another 4 years. Even at sub 10m levels another 4 years will put the Ps3 near 100mil

If you want to do it that way you are still wrong. 120million. But rest assured Ps3 will still sell for another 4+ years.

Of what relevance price is? Is that a serious question. And that hasn't stopped the PS3 from currently being only 23 or so million behind the LTD Wii numbers. At the rate at which the PS3 is going 2 years at most and the PS3 will top the Wii. And again, imagine that damage that a $149 PS3 or even a  $199 PS3 will do to the Wii's slim lead.

the point is, it's sub 10M this and will decline quickly after that. a price cut won't make dozens of milions of late adopters buy it, especially with wii u and other consoles getting popular and in wii u's case it's not much more expensive.
