Pretty crazy considering just 2-3 years ago it was deemed inevitable for it to cross 50% and remain there. People just seemed to have lost interest in it. Something even price cuts couldn't remedy.

A few years ago people were saying it was inevitable that the Wii would pass the PS2 in sales.  At this point, it probably won't even surpass PS1 sales.

it depends on how long they keep supporting it, 5 million isn't completely impossible.  But either way, the wii will likely go down as the most "profitable" home console of all time.  Which is honestly much better than having the largest market share.

Where are the charts on VGChartz that track profit? :)

What does that have to do with anything? :)

but there is this http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=136006 :P

It's important because the majority of this site's membership is here to discuss unit sales.  That's what the site provides in terms of content.  If I search for a game in that little box at the top it doesn't tell me how profitable the game was.

Interesting link though.

I get what you are talking about, but my issue with it is that wasn't what I was talking about.  Just because this site's members discuss unit sales doesn't mean I can't talk about profits.  While unit sales are valuable, what determines whether we will have a ps5/wiiz/next-next-box will be profit not market share.  So why you are telling me i can't talk about profits(well you aren't actually telling me that, you are just hinting at it) is a mystery to me.

Wow. Another thread with a huge potential for fanboy wars.

Well.. that´s not a big deal. It´s in the end of its commercial life and the sucessor is already out. 100 million pieces sold is a respectable number

What's their current market share in 2013?

Well deserved for PS3 and 360.

I wouldn't be surprised if Wii's marketshare drops below even 30% and lose its 1st spot.

It's definitely fine by me if you talk about profits.  You're right too in that it determines future viability of consoles.  It's just not what a lot of us are here for.  For me, it's not a counter-argument to a decline in sales.

I wasn't trying to counter-argue:P  I was just stating that the wii will likely go down as the biggest money making home console in history, it wasn't meant to be a counter-argument or anything, just trying to be the glass half-full kinda guy:P

So today PS360 have around 50M lead over Wii? That's pretty massive and will increase by another 50M, possibly.

Wii did a quick sprint and died but PS360 are marathon runners so it seems.

As expected. I expect it to finish at 35-36% when the dust has settled, with PS3 around 33% and 360 around 31%

So basically a 3 way tie.

Yeah, I expect in the end Wii will still be tops in Japan, 2nd in NA and 2nd in PAL.  PS3 will take PAL with 360 in third and vice versa in NA.

wow... they are actually combining the numbers of ps3 and 360... and say... yeah wii is doomed.....

ok then....
wii + ps3 sold more than 360....
360 +wii sold more than ps3...

oh yeah now i understand... it is not that fun....

Tis a shame Wii didn't reach 50%. It almost did. I wonder if it was above 50 during first few years. I don't think so but you would think so the way it took off. Perhaps it would if it wasn't supply constraint. I remember lots of haters saying it was a false constraint when in reality Nintendo didn't expect such high demand.

Same here, I really thought the sky was the limit for the Wii, and that 50% was a given. But in retrospect, it's tough to get over 50% marketshare when litterally the entire industry is against you, which was the case with the Wii. Still makes me smile though that a console that served as a big f-you to the industry managed to take such a big chunk of the marketshare and completely dominate for several years. Eventually, the third parties lack of support, and Nintendo moving on to Wii U, perhaps a little too quickly, caught up with the Wii and did it in.

Though somehow, I don't think Nintendo cares too much about losing that tiny bit of marketshare when their console was a sales phenomenon, pure profit machine, that is on pace for 100 million units sold.

my thoughts exactly ^

Games can and should tell stories and share ideas through their mechanics. This is the intrinsic element of the medium and this is how experiences should be crafted in video games. No company does this as well as Nintendo and their echoes from the past.
