While I agree with every single point you made, there are two reasons why SMW is superior to newer 2D Mario games.

1) SMW had much, much tighter controls. I couldn't believe how "un-Mario" the controls and response time felt on New Super Mario Bros. Wii when I first played it. It's like every level is on ice. Rapid consecutive jumps often don't register as well as on SMW. This is a huge offence in 2D platformers, especially when Nintendo got it right over 20 years ago.

2) This may be subjective, but SMW is more imaginative than NSMB. NSMB feels like a revisit to old themes, whereas SMW felt newer at the time and had more creative levels. I'd like Nintendo to make a 2D Mario with the same kind of "freshness" SMW had. Again, this is highly subjective.



SMW is the game that made me side with NINTENDO
Nothing can beat SMW. The cape is the best power up ever by the way.

I actually agree with this.

Super Mario World has been a consistently overrated game. I don't think it's all that special. Especially when there's a title of much higher quality on the same system; Yoshi's Island. The latter just beats Mario World in every way. I like New Super Mario Bros. U better too. I never put a lot of hours into World though, those hours back in the day went into Super Mario Bros. 3 on NES instead, also a much better game.

I just know you're going to do a thread like this on Ocarina of Time too, which I'm going to ignore because you can't speak truth in that .

OT- The thing about the NSMBWii and U games IMO is that I believe these games are meant to be played as a multi-player experience. I mostly skimmed your Zelda thread, because somewhere in it you admitted to playing the games like only once and you also demonstrated some lack of understanding (don't remember exact details though).

The main problem with labeling NSMBW and NSMBU as primarily multiplayer experiences is that there are quite a few levels where 3+ players guarantees death for at least one player. Do you seriously want to make the claim that Nintendo made such glaring mistakes during development when their games are usually highly polished? It's obvious that the levels were designed for a single player and the multiplayer is the tacked on part. You might also want to come forward and admit that you have yet to play NSMBU in-depth.

At least I was actually trying in my zelda thread, although I admit it was a rushed thread kinda like nsmb2 (joking), you are not even really trying here although people are giving you serious responses. I never said I only played the zelda games once I said I never fully replayed the games, and the type of game zelda is makes the reasons obvious, I'm also sure I showed no lack of understanding.

Also no where in my post I said anything about playing NSMBU. So why would I want to come forward and admit to not playing it in depth?

So what if there are a few levels that guarantee death for a 3rd or 4th  player (actually that was the fun part), the majority of the levels are still better played with more than one player. SMB to SMW probably has some levels which can played with more than one player that doesn't mean the game was meant to played multiplayer. Do you seriously want to make the claim that nintendo devotes a large amount of resources for the NSMB series and never rushes it out to the market?

Actually, I felt NSMB felt fresher than Mario World. Mario World was more like SMB3 with shorter and less interesting/adventurous worlds. NSMB was the first new 2D mario experience in 15 years.

While Yoshi was a really awesome addition, the cape was a dissapointment compared to the raccoon tail and tanuki suit.

So on freshness, unless you somehow missed out on SMB3 completely, NSMB definitely had a much more fresh feeling than Mario World.

I have to say that I agree with pretty much every point that Rol is making here so I won't repeat them. The game is extremely overrated.

Whenever someone tells me that Super Mario World is their favorite or one of their favorite Mario games I ask them how old that they were when they played it. It turns out that about 98% of them were children. People don't love SMW because of how great it is, but because of how great it was in their youthful and uncritical eyes.
