Forums - Gaming - Square Enix: MMO is not performing to the level we anticipated.

Source: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-04-09-wada-huge-loss-was-like-a-voice-from-the-heavens

"We have done everything we can do to adapt and respond to the drastically changing environment. However, we have not been able to accomplish satisfactory results since FY2011," Wada said. "I intended to do what had to be done, but these results came despite my best efforts. We are performing negatively in the Amusement sector, negative in EUR/NA console games, and although Social Media Games are doing well, MMO is not performing to the level we anticipated.

Note: This is about their current fiscal year (April 2012 - March 2013), so Dragon Quest X would be the biggest component, though any rises they expected in FFXIV before the relaunch could factor in.

Seems like nothing is meeting their expectations these days.

Playstation = The Beast from the East

Sony + Nintendo = WIN! PS3 + PSV + PS4 + Wii U + 3DS

i thought they said they are earning a lot of their profit from MMO like FF-XI

I really don't know what to think about DQX. I mean, it's an SD MMO that sold 600k copies, it must at least be approaching breaking even with that + whatever subscribers they've had since launch.

I'm guessing the performance of the game in itself isn't the problem, the issue is more that it's a Dragon Quest game in Japan and they may have been expecting it to have millions of buyers and at least keep the majority of them as subscribers in order to fund their AAA console experiences for many years. And as it stands, DQX is looking like it isn't keeping the subscribers, so it's not making them the money they had hoped it would.

To be honest, it looks like a mismanaged project right from the get-go. Should've been Wii-U exclusive OR Wii/PS3. Shouldn't have been a numbered title. Shouldn't have been developed at the expense of a new numbered entry in the series.

I don't think that anyone thinks that DQX is doing good, but they still leave us in the dark. With no information about subscriptions, we know little.

They screwed up FFXIV royally and by the time DQX came out that entire monthly paid subscription model was on it's way out the door. They should've moved to a model like Guild Wars has.

They need to stop fucking around and make something that will actually sell, like FFXV or Versus....

Have you actually read what is going on with Square ? Sellers don't make money. Their problem is not that their games don't sell but that they can't balance huge dev costs with profits.

Back on track how Wada handled mmos -a possible gold mine- is just dissapointing. The game in question Dragon Quest X:

  • released on a console  that is NOT established as a core online gaming device
  • a console  at the end of its life span.

For the love of god Wada chickened out and released FF XIII on the 360 but kept DGX as a Wii exclusive ? Brilliant Wada, just brilliant.

So let me get this straight.. instead of making games that people want, SE makes an exclusive MMO for the Wii (lol) then pours more money in the train-wreck that is FFXIV ._.

People can play DQX free for two hours a day, so it's very possible that not many people actually bother to subscribe.

Anyway, if you look at their expectations they were projecting that DQX and FFXIV would bring in like 10 billion yen per year. FFXI only regularly brought in like 5 or 6 billion, so... they're fucking nuts. Again.
