Forums - Microsoft Discussion - More Details on Always-Online Xbox Revealed

In this kind of industry, if a rumor keeps popping up, time and time again and isnt disproved then it's most likely true, it sounds completely shit, and im not sure Microsoft are that oblivious to their consumers wants, i wonder what they are gaining from an always connected console?

well there are some perks for MS. first of all its a way to fight piracy, which is rampant on the 360. another thing is that they would make their console more online oriented, everything is connected, everything uses online, so basically they would make the attatch rate of xbox live gold gold to every console sold much, much higher. it would also open the door for more people buying from their online store since they are already connected and most likely have xbox love gold and already use their credit card for it. another thing is that it gives them more control over the console, which is something that MS seems to love to do lately.

if these rumors are true though (wont believe it until they announce it) then its like microsoft if begging me not to ever buy their console

As a Playstation princess, I sincerely hope not because whatever Microsoft does, Sony copies sooner rather than later.

remember the good old days when it was the other way around? :-p

All these rumours can't all be baseless. If it was Kotaku alone saying this I wouldn't believe.

Even EDGE which is very reliable reported this a few months ago.

I don't get why everyone thinks the comments from Gamestop automatically puts this thing to bed. Yeah, a console that blocks used games would hurt Gamestop's business model, but it would still be dumb for the retailer not to sell new consoles and games. It could just refuse to buy used games from consumers and limit the stock of 720 products.

I for one, will not comment on rumors or speculation.

It is funny because if this is true the industry will get there eventually. So at some point people will either stop gaming or shut up and deal with it.

Well if this is true it kind of helps what I think Microsoft will be doing, and has wanted to do. They are moving away from having their platform limited to the console and make their platform a multi-device spanning service. The new console will only act as one gateway to the service with Smart enable devices via Smart Glass and the Windows Store/Live through Windows 8. So instead of being confined to the console you buy a game the console uses in place of downloading it and then ditches the disc. And they will probably make the Live service multi-tier "unlocking" the ability to play the game on other devices.

I doubt nintendo would go that route tbh, sony might if the nextbox implements this and still succeeds, which is also doubtful

Lol MS's creative director practically confirmed this. Or at the very least, heavily implying it.
