Forums - Sony Discussion - PS4 'isn't quite as powerful as Epic was hoping for,' Digital Foundry reports

Yeah, got that from a previous post. I'm curious to see how the 8GB will be split up for high resource games, like how it will prioritize the lion's share of RAM in a scene with a ton of particle systems going, LOD, mutiple character models, physics, and everything else. There has to be some sort of pecking order as to who gets first dibs to the RAM resources.

I think the developer have all the control over the RAM... it is not like PC with variable possibilities of RAM... they make everything to fit all the 8GB without variations (I think less because the OS).

8GB GDDR5 UNIFIED memory. This is the only RAM that is available to PS4 and is shared by eveything.(This is a positive thing in case you don't understand)

It's all up to the developers, the kind of game, and what they prioritize be it graphics or frame-rate.

"Digital Foundry does note that the differences can be the result of the relative newness of PS4. "The DirectX 11 API is very mature while the PS4 tools and APIs are still in their initial stages of development--it's going to take time for devs to fully get to grips with the new hardware."

This. And Power never satisfies.

I don't think "new-ness" should matter very much. It's all about the documentation. Here's hoping Sony provides the best documentation ever and its easy to understand and IN ENGLISH.

Yeah..looks like this time Sony would strive to work well in that department too. And when more developers are already certain to take advantage of PS4's x86 CPU, things are only looking to head north.

Ps4 is the first Sony console to be designed in America so I'm optimistic.

I hope by design your are not refering to appearance. The xboxes ( especially the original ) I think are ugly beast :)

Digital Foundry aren't devs and make a ton of mistakes in their analysis. I've seen it time and time again. Why do people think like Digital Foundry know better than devs? It's just a fact...they don't.

Sounds confusing, I'll have to read some developers post-motems on Gamasutra after some games are released on the PS4.

I remember Mark Rein said that Samaritan demo from last year required processing power of 2.5 TFLOPs to run at 720p resolution.

So the PS4 is definitely below that.

But what can he say now? 1.8 TFLOP for PS4 is OK, and they need to sell this Unreal 4 engine to as many PS4/720 devs as possible (that is their business after all), so he's not going to slag on the PS4/720.

Behind the scenes though it's possible they were a little disappointed in the GPU raw horsepower as it doesn't meet the requirements for Samaritan at 720p that he outlined.

The Samritan demo last year is better than Elementa demo... even on PC.

My guess is the Samaritan demo level fidelity is what Epic wanted from consoles going into this gen (at 720p), but they're not going to get it (unless MS is holding onto a big megaton).

Gonna have to settle for 8GB of RAM as a consolation prize.
