Rechecked the numbers and it seems like the 776 580 isn't for all Wii U games, only the ones that charted in the Top 500. Those five games did exactly 776 580 in total, so games outside of the Top 500 clearly isn't counted.

Only thing we know is that the sixth best selling Wii U title did less than 13 219, and VGChartz have the sixth game (Tekken) at 6.8k.

As far as handhelds for the Japanese market go, that's the one market where they know what they're doing. It's just about everything else that they're having a bit of a struggle with.
