Forums - Gaming - NPD report reveals a huge global increase in Digital Game sales

Do you prefer to buy games physically or digitally?

Physical 118 69.82%

Digital 50 29.59%

Total:168

VGChartz really should stop tracking PC games, with Steam and Origin growing bigger and bigger the numbers are nowhere near accurate right now.

Really? Let's not overexaggerate this. I mean, just because Diablo 3 is tracked at 3 mil and Blizzard said it sold 12 mil doesn't mean anything... ;)

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

Yeah, and Team Fortress 2 and League of Legends tracked at an impressive 0.00Mil, World of Tanks at 0,17Mil...

Given the choice between a physical and digital copy of a game I would pick the digital copy almost every time.

One thing these numbers show is that Vgchartz needs to start tracking digital sales and they need to start ASAP because they are running the risk of becoming irrelevant.

"Even Nintendo has embraced digital distribution for the 3DS and Wii U"

And the Nintendo bullying continues

Dude, don't take the ridiculousness to the other extreme. This statement is 100% legit, you can't disagree that Nintendo has been a few years (a gen?) behind Sony, MS and PC and only recently managed to catch up in this department. I'm pretty sure when it comes to the volume of sales it's still nowhere near PSN, Live and Steam+GoG levels.

All 3 just started this past gen.  You can argue the success of each all you like, but the Wii had a digital store.

That's why it says embraced and not discovered. The digital store on Wii with all its ridiculous limitations was a joke and can't be considered legitimate digital distribution. This came with 3DS and Wii U. They have finally managed to catch up. Nintendo, welcome to 2006 yet again I guess...

I guess all those downloadable games I have don't exist then.  Strange.

Nah, you're just very stubborn or have trouble reading. Just compare PSN or Live to WiiWare. Read about the ridiculous limits Nintendo imposed on the devs to allow them to release a game there. Read why Super Meat Boy wasn't released on Wii, even though the devs really wanted to do it and tried for a long time. Then maybe you'll understand. It was a poor excuse for a digital store, a handicapped substitute of the real deal. Only now has Nintendo joined the real world. Just accept the facts and life will be easier for you. Nintendo has made mistakes in the last few years and now has to catch up in these departments. Negating reality won't change it.

I guess Nintendo shuold have just magically added more memory to every existing Wii so that they could lift the file size cap.  I would love to live in your fantasy world.

I guess they should considering both Sony and MS somehow managed to perfom this black magic, MS even did this with the original X-box. In fact Wii supported SDHC cards and USB HDD just like Wii U does, but all in all - can't you really see that you are just proving my point? Nintendo has just arrived to the year 2006 in this aspect. Pointing it out isn't hating, but stating the obvious facts. You are the one living in a fantasy world, just better accept reality and don't fight it.

You win.  The Virtual Console doesn't exist.  WiiWare doesn't exist.  I guess I better go delete them from Wikipedia.

Hey thanks for the personal attack.

Unlike the other hardware makers, Nintendo's philosophy has not been "MOAR MOAR MOAR!" for the past decade now.  They went cheap, and kicked ass in doing so.  They didn't give the Wii a ton of memory to lower the price.  Yet they did embrace connectivity and digital gaming at the same time.  The Wii Shop Channel with the Virtual Console and WiiWare, the Nintendo Channel, the Mii Channel, the News Channel, the Weather Channel, the Everybody Votes Channel, the Photo Channel, Netflix, Hulu...

Your preconceived notions about Nintendo are long out of date.  Online gaming is another story, but they have been there with the digital store just fine.  Listening to you, you would think they just started up.

i don't like to buy games that lose all their value, i might as well wait at that point. With digital they have no value as soon as you buy them. I know most people don't seem to mind spending $60 on a new game and maybe sell it for $10 later but i do. It's easier just to buy games that hold their value, then if you want to sell them you can actually buy a newer game. Perhaps its because i've been through several generations already, but i'm in no hurry to buy the newest game, even if i really want to play it. My backlog from previous generations is pretty much infinite anyways.
