I guess they should considering both Sony and MS somehow managed to perfom this black magic, MS even did this with the original X-box. In fact Wii supported SDHC cards and USB HDD just like Wii U does, but all in all - can't you really see that you are just proving my point? Nintendo has just arrived to the year 2006 in this aspect. Unlike the other hardware makers, Nintendo's philosophy has not been "MOAR MOAR MOAR!" for the past decade now.  They went cheap, and kicked ass in doing so.  They didn't give the Wii a ton of memory to lower the price.  Yet they did embrace connectivity and digital gaming at the same time.  The Wii Shop Channel with the Virtual Console and WiiWare, the Nintendo Channel, the Mii Channel, the News Channel, the Weather Channel, the Everybody Votes Channel, the Photo Channel, Netflix, Hulu...

Your preconceived notions about Nintendo are long out of date.  Online gaming is another story, but they have been there with the digital store just fine.  Listening to you, you would think they just started up.
