3770k really is kind of overkill for that GPU if you're doing single screen gaming.

You've got a habit of telling gamers when they're killing it! Haven't you learned that many of them LIKE to kill it?

Im just using my experience to pass on stuff i've learned over the years first hand. There is no better feeling than knowing you are utilizing 100% of your PC's performance to dollar ratio to get the performance you want/need...

Put everything on maximum. There's no game that won't run well on your PC.

Running "well" and run everything @ "max" are very different, though.

Everything at "max" usually means needless GPU rape often with no real benefits. For example, maxing out AA on a 24 inch 1080p screen is just silly...putting it to something resonable like 2X or FXAA can save you 20% of performance depending on GPU while visually not lowering your experience at all.

I see people that often just push all settings to max and really don't undertand what they are doing and if the extra noise, heat, power usage and frame rate drops are benefiting their gaming experience at all.

Down the road you can pick up another GTX 660 if your mobo is SLi capable and get a 120 hz or 3 X 60hz monitors and go crazy.

i also do 3D art work on autodesk maya and some other programs, so its not just for gaming though it doesnt seem so, i cuoldnt even run Tomb raider on high setting earlier... something seems wrong, ill try another game see what happens

Yeah there is most likely a bottleneck issue somewhere...I love when that happens. :)

After reinstalling the latest drivers (clean install) I'd fire up GPUZ, Core temp, task manager and anything else that I can think of and monitor performance while I play a game. GPU should be your bottleneck and if your GPU is running 100% capacity, you're probably running the game the best that you can on that rig

lol you love when a bottleneck happens? why?

so you are saying that i should reinstall the drivers after checking for updates. install GPUZ, core tem and run task manager and monitor performance while i play the game?

so you are saying that this is the best performance i will get from my rig? seems really low honestly

I just love to troubleshoot things and not just computer related...

Honestly, I'd boot up GPUZ and go to the sensors tab and see if you can use that data to find out whats happening. Having a second monitor that you can use to view GPUZ while you game helps big time.

- If your GPU is runnign 100% while you're gaming, thats as good as it gets.

- If your GPU isn't running at 100%, something else is bottlenecking.

Look at GPU temperature as well as memory usage... I doubt thats the problem, but it could be an issue. Also install FRAPS and maybe measure the frame rate you are getting.

ok so i got me a new PC and i havent really played games on PC in a VERY long time, my question is, before starting a game how do i know which quality settings to go with? and whether to turn on v-sync or not and the frame rate. would be cool if i got some help on this. i just installed tomb raider and i want to get the best out of my PC

anyways here are my pc specs

core i7 3770k 3.41 ghz

GTX 660 2GB DDR5

8GB ram 1600 mhz

Nice:

1) You will dick on 99% of ported games. Turn everything up to max except BF 3 and Crysis 3. If the game is not DX 11, then laugh and turn it up to max and watch what 120 fps looks like.

2) If playing at 1080p, AA need not be higher than x2, maybe x4 at a push

3) Turn on V sync if over 30fps....which you will be for most games

since it's a rather new game make sure to have the latest drivers (as the others already pointed out).
In some cases you can get huge boosts.

My point was that every game will run on maximum and well. I mean, I can play most new games(that have XP versions) on high settings with a Phenom X3 2.3GHz, 2GB DDR2 RAM and a GTS 450. This PC can surely play every new game maxed with anti-aliasing enabled at more than 30 FPS.

Not all of them. Games like Tomb Raider and Crysis 3 require higher-end cards than a 660 to pull off maximum performance.

im playing red alert 2, do you think my rig can pull of the best settings on that one?
