For the longest time, while reading the books, I thought that Wights and Others were the same thing. If I'm not mistaken the Others are beings made of ice (or that are surrounded by cold) and Wights are the humans that rise from the dead after being killed by the Others. Right?

White Walkers or Others are a mysterious race seperate from men. Wights are their slaves which are essentially the dead brought back.

Wow I haven't read the books yet, but having Sam killed it would def have been better. The impression I got from Sam was that he was a coward. He didn't even bother fighting it and just try to squirm away.

Indeed, that's why it was important imo. But maybe they've cooked something up for him later. Or maybe not. Meh, the white walkers/others are so much better in the books. Everyone should read them!

Here I was ready to shout "Sam the Slayer!" at the screen and...nothing.

On the show I think it is a fine supplementary material to the books as you understand certain aspects better (although the changes can be bit confusing) as alone their can be moments I'd understand people being a bit lost as to what if transpiring.

That thing crawling to him was not an Other.

Yeah it's on the way back that he kills an Other with the Dragonglass dagger and then when he tries to attack Wight Small Paul with the blade it breaks on his mail.

A Song of Ice and Fire has all the emotions and thoughts of the human experience.  The main plot points are just the surface as it is the characters and their personalities and interaction within this complex world that make it such a joy.  It is a dark world that is often unforgiving, but that is what makes it feel real and the victories feel so earned.
