Honestly surprised the DS is at the bottom.

my first thought was when i saw this was that 1998 was easily the best year in gaming.

Portable consoles in the west have always been treated like a third-class citizen.

In my particular case, these devices are preventing me from abandoning  gaming.

The Wii winning isn't that big a surprise - consoles are often judged not by considering the quality of every single game released for it, but rather the number of great and innovative experiences that reached a significant audience on it. Wii Sports, Mario Galaxies, both Zeldas, Wii Fit... the Wii did have a lot of games that introduced a new genre to the market and/or were considered by many to be the best examples of the genre. A survey of 2000 people is going to cover a broad range of people who play games - this broader view is unlikely to reflect the general feeling that comes across in the comments sections of video game websites.

PS1 below PS2 and PS3? Genesis above SNES? No wonder they drive on the left. At least they put the Wii on top.

No surprise here. Wii sold a lot and families enjoyed it. We can´t deny that for some 2 years it was a very popular trend. And most people on this survey probably based their choices on their purchases made in a period of  6-7 years.

People here in these forums doesn´t seem to understand that what makes a product stand out is not just specs, but how hey match consumers expectations and feelings. The Wii wasnt the most powerful, but it was the cheapest and the most acessible for people who, before it, were not interested in videogames at all. It wasn´t a stronger device, but it was a better product.

I was agreeing with you until the last part, the wii is by far the worst product with the most shovel ware, least amount of good games, and weakest specs.

The hardware list tells a lot about the likely age of the 2000 people questioned so one could have doubts about the objectivity of this research. Still odd though, as it doesn't really align with the choice of years for best games. Anyway, no way the 7th gen offerings are 'better' than PS1, SNES and N64. With a few exceptions, the list should basically be reversed .

Agreed (to you and the others mentioning '98).

1998 is definitely the best year in gaming. In the top 50 thread in december, most games by far in my list were from 1998.
