There is a difference between range and sample-size. If you asked everyone in China what they thought about an issue, your sample-size would be excellent as a proportion of the earth's population but very narrow in terms of range. The point I was making is that a survey of 2,000 GAME customers is likey to cover a broader range of gamers (hardcore, casual, young, old) than might be typically found posting on gaming forums (fora?).
That is plain ridiculous on both year and best console list in my opinion. PS3 and 360 ahead of PS2 and PS1? Wii waaaaay ahead of N64? Ah well.
So the top consoles weren't around for any of the best years in gaming history? Okay, that makes no sense.
Really, though, these popularity contests are as dismissible as always. More recent entries score higher than they should, older entries score lower than they should, probably due to the inclusion of younger voters with limited experience.
We see this all the time with lists of athletes, where fans will vote for someone good over someone great simply because they are more familiar with them.

Hardcore gamers must be too busy playing games to fill out a survey. Or perhaps they're just illiterate.
To the amateur statisicians: 2000 is a plenty big enough sample size to draw conclusions about a population almost any size. Of course, this is one retailer in the UK, so you probably shouldn't draw conclusions that it represents all UK gamers, and you definitely shouldn't try to draw conclusions for gamers worldwide.

The only way i can see this poll making sense is that the gamers are kids who would not know anything about super nintendo, n64, ps1.... the originals...
and wii is defiantly NOT the top, the only games i even got and kept were the ones nintendo did, and they have done much better in the past with the super nintendo and n64 in my opinion, i really loved those great nintendo games and 3rd party titles.
hint for nintendo: i mentioned 3rd party titles, key being 3rd party titles!
