I'm sorry but more powerful is good for a console, but it isn't the most or only important factor. The console needs to sell, which means it has to appeal to consumers and be at the right price all in relevance to competition. More power can be pretty pointless if it isn't easy to develop for like the Cell wasn't. It took a long time and a lot of money for the Cell to be "worth it" and still it isn't worth it to many publishers to go farther than they need to to run their multiplats. You don't see call of duty or assassins creed pushing the Cell like Uncharted or God of War, they take advantage of the middle ware but I doubt they'd spend the money to further optimize and make the PS3 version run better than the 360 one.
This is why PS4 is pretty exciting as it should be really easy to develop for and yet it might be the most powerful console from the big 3. If not, it still seems like a console can't be made easier to develop for than the PS4 which is at least that advantage. Maybe the cloud will make this the last console, I don't know, but it will be a while before that could happen and hardware with some power behind it will matter.
Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Thanks, but I usually end up with empty boxes like above (although I've managed to shrink it down) and yet I see quotes like yours with NO empty boxes! How? Can you actually delete the box too?

You should be able to click on the box itself to delete them, instead of just the text. One click on the bottom of the box line and it will highlight them...all for some reason but if you hit delete it should delete only the box and its content that you click on. Usually I click on the box line above the bottom one to keep the most recent post, just like I did on this quote tree.

Yes and no.
Yes, power has never meant the console gets more sales, and all his other points are very good.
BUT..
...no, power becomes more important due to Moore's Law. Doubling RAM etc 10 years ago only added a bit more power, doubling it now adds a ton more power. You have to love that exponential curve!
- Present said list to a large enough sample space of gamers before sending them off to a desert island for 3 years. - See that the vast majority of gamers would rather take the PS3 games. - Realise that there is such a thing as objectivity in such a matter. |
I'm sorry but this guy is correct. Sure some people like Uncharted or Gears, some like Halo or Resistance + Killzone, but then when the Wii is compared to the HD consoles it gets sad.
LBP Vs. Mario, Zelda Vs. InFAMOUS, and Grand Turismo Vs. Mario Kart. Sound like another tie? Ok now add all of the 3rd party games: BF3 vs ..., GTA vs ..., AC vs. ..., RDR vs. ..., and the list goes on and on. Sorry I know far too many friends who switched from the Wii to the 360/PS3 and never looked back to pretend it is all opinion.
In a way it is all opinion, but the grand majority opinion of gamers state that the Wii has a joke of a library of games compared to PC/PS3/360. That is why the Wii is starting to get out sold by the PSP every week while the PS3 just started to outsell the 3DS!
P.S. Don't spam me with a bunch of obscure Wii games that sold 500k and act like they make a difference. I haven't even listed half of the best PS3 exclusives...

it´s the most expensive in the market right now.
Arguably the console with the best overall specs did win the generations. PS1 won the sales race because part of its tech was CD drive with CD music playback. A spec completely absent from Nintendo and Sega consoles, and a spec the game development industry was right behind as the future of gaming. PS2 won because it again had the superior optical media specs, this time with movie play back. Wii won because it had the superior and highly desired motion control tech. Which MS and Sony came late to. MS didn't win in it's first outing because it was late and battling the PS1 momentum.
Raw power to make pretty pictures and smooth framerates might not be the tech that determines the winner, but superior technical functionality of one sort or another has definitely been a factor for each generation's winners, at least since Sony got in the game.
