Forums - PC - So SimCity does not require always on connection for gameplay?

I don't really care.

Unless Maxis gets its shit together with a patch to fix the issues (online only, small ass cities - the game should really be called SimTown -, no teraforming, etc...) I'm going to wait for the game to improve over patch releases. If I ever buy it.

It's like people are currently beta testing the product.

I re-installed Sim City 4 yesterday. And visuals aside, even if they are still ok, I'm having a blast playing this game again.

How can so few people actually read?

Maxis said that they need the servers to simulate the region. Someone said that you can run a city without needing an internet connection and somehow this means that Maxis have lied?

Please can someone fill me in, I am clearly missing something if the rest of the internet seems to disagree with me

I think Maxis have made a mistake by focusing on the multiplayer side of things, but it is the way that the game is designed and it works really rather well when the servers are playing along (which they have been for nearly all my games).

The region sis nothing amazing though.  It's just a small sim ran every 20 minutes, you don't really need the cloud for that.  It should be as simple as-- am I in an offline region?  Yes?  Ok, sim the other cities in this region instead of making the servers do it.

Tada!

That UK modder video is fantastic. He finds terraforming tools they left out of the retail versions, he finds a way to play offline indefinitely, he finds you can easily edit at least the roads outside of the city boundaries, AND he finds a way of showing the REAL population of cities rather than the fake inflated numbers, turns out it's only 15% the size of what the game tells you.

I'd be laughing if it wasn't so tragic that they've so severely gimped what was once a fantastic franchise.

Doesn't matter. I'm not buying EA anymore. Sucks as SimCity and Battlefield are part of my top franchises.

They need to change their path with DRM, Nintendo, and micro-transactions to have my future money.

It is just the way it works, it is the way they have designed it, but I am not saying that they HAVE to have it like that, but rather the way it is coded

When playing in a region, trading things like power, water, sewage etc are vital to keep a city moving and I definitely noticed that when the servers were acting up, I couldn't rely on my neighbours to deal with the sewage, it it just wasn't acting properly. So there is definitely simulation going on in the servers, it is definitely not as simple as flicking a switch

Strangely enough, the sewage problems happen because of traffic jams. That's just one of many ways the game is fundamentally broken.

Huh? I have had some traffic issues, but seen no correlation with sewage

They should have called it SimCity Online. Then considerably fewer people would've complained about the server issues as it's expected of an online game.

I'm on an ipad at the moment so I really don't want to type everything out, but it essentially water and sewage pipes are affected by traffic. If you have water or sewage entering or leaving the city and if there's a traffic jam at the single entrance to the city (as their often is) then you will have problems.
