Forums - PC - So SimCity does not require always on connection for gameplay?

Time to look at the bright side. This fiasco should do wonders for sales of Tropico 4! It's a similar game I've been told, but runs well and is fun!

The even have a 'modern times' DLC:

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

if this was on steam it would be ok

how many games on steam require an always online internet connection?

Steam does not run single player games off a server. It only requires you connect to Steam for achievements and chat features (like Xbox Live)

Single players games are 100% on your computer. It is not the same as what EA are doing.

main thing-on steam you can play whenever you want, whereever you

sim city can only be played as long as EA is willing to run the server. And EA is used to shut down servers within two years i

Technically all of them. But Steam has an offline option where you can play the game without connecting to your account.

That's not always online, because you just activate it and then can turn it off forever. Few does this though, however PC gamers criticize SecuRom when it's essentially like steam.

I didn't know that Steam rootkits your Windows installation.

So during this whole SimCity launch event, Maxis and EA have both maintained that SimCity requires a connection at all times to function and to give us offline play it would require a significant undertaking. The game is so entrenched in the cloud that bringing it offline is pretty much off the table.

Except apparently that's not true.

A trusted source came forward and revealed what really gets sent to the servers and said that bringing the game offline isn't a big deal.

kotaku also found that they were able to play without a problem with their Internet off for 19 minutes.

Well to add to this, in a way that will admittingly annoy you.   A friend of mine mentioned there is already a crack for the game.

Which i'd assume has to have allowed offline play.

and also gimps your disc drive so that even if your burning legitamite cds your drive overworks and burns out.

Granted, less a problem in the MP3 player era... still shitty.

This is one of those edge cases where I'll happily crack the game.

SimCity modded to allow unlimited offline play

SimCity has been modded to allow for uninterrupted offline play, following the spate of server issues that dogged the game when it launched last week.

Modder UKAzzer posted a video of his handiwork in action over on Reddit. He explains how the mod can be enacted by playing around with the game’s debug mode.

Typically SimCity would kick gamers off after playing offline for 20 minutes. This mod removes the blog completely. It suggests that – contrary to what EA and Maxis has been saying – the game doesn’t need to be online to run at all. But we don’t know otherwise as nothing has been clarified on the matter.

Here’s the clip:

If you want the details on why SimCity has been causing gamers a mass headache, I strongly advise you read my round-up of the whole shitstorm. Check it out here.

So yea there is that

@TheVoxelman on twitter

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

How can so few people actually read?

Maxis said that they need the servers to simulate the region. Someone said that you can run a city without needing an internet connection and somehow this means that Maxis have lied?

Please can someone fill me in, I am clearly missing something if the rest of the internet seems to disagree with me

I think Maxis have made a mistake by focusing on the multiplayer side of things, but it is the way that the game is designed and it works really rather well when the servers are playing along (which they have been for nearly all my games).

It's already been modded to play offline
