I'll definitely won't buy both in the same holiday season. And without the release hype, I'll most likely wait with the other system untill the first slim model. So in my case, yes somebody is losing an early sale.

Looking at the PS3 and 360, there's reason to believe two similar systems can coexist and see success. Though it looks like the PS4 and Nextbox will be more different than the PS3 & 360, based on rumors of course. I expect them both to do better than the Wii U due to their predecessors having stronger support & attention at the tail-end of the 7th gen. Not to mention the superior 3rd party support.

No, it doesn't matter. Like the Wii U, the early adopters will the fans. The two launching together may in fact boost the collective hype, not unlike when Wii and PS3 launched. Of course Wii overshadowed PS3 a bit, but I still don't think it hurts.

Almost certainly, yeah. But neither will be massive-sellers so it'll likely be a small, unnoticeable difference because of the loyal fans getting either system.

So I see both launching weaker than the Wii U, but selling better come the January-March period. So all systems after a year will likely have similar launch-aligned sales.

GTA5 should have people sticking to PS3 and 360 for a while. So a slower "launch" but better sales through the months after.

I can't see 5 different consoles (leave alone ds, 3ds, psp, psv) on the shelves being successful... some will have to suffer and it will be interesting what is most impacting and which is most suffering.

Well, while it's true the Wii U will offer a unique experience, I think there'll actually be more the 720/PS4 are doing that the Wii U isn't... at least regarding what's relevant to core gamers, and they are for the most part the early adopters.

Nintendo's best bet is to bring out the software giants and cut the price if they can afford to. 

I believe the pent up demand for new hardware by the hardcore will allow both to sell fine. It is the hardcore, after all, that tend to buy systems at launch compared to more casual/average gamers.
