There is a first year "lull" that has affect all consoles with the exception of the Wii. Considering what happening with the US handling the economy and Europe one creeping to improvement I think the first year lull for each of new console will be like the Wii U right now, then what the 360 or the PS3 had.

The initial adopters will buy it in swarms the first two months but once January hits the sales will free fall to near flat-line levels. This isn't because they are not the best things out there it just that the economics of market has seriously changed and the older systems with the bigger libraries getting a lot of the same games are going to be the better buy for anyone outside of each system core market.

Even there is problems with the core market with only 29% intending to buy "no matter what". These are the one who are saving for the system now and will have the money. The rest as an indication of what is being said are going to wait for price cuts and some of the cuts required would probably be serious for companies who are in an economic slump.

Sales gimicks could help like the mobile type plans but need to be embraced by the retail segment, and currently there are not real rumors on anyone but Microsoft trying to expand its program and it would be a kind of a tougher sell for Sony and more so Nintendo to do, who base internet service is free.

No, unless they have big price tags. People are hungry for next gen. Plus ps3- no games, huge price- ps4 is looking to side step those problems. 360- Supply constrained- hard to tell if this will be an issue with new consoles but if Sony and MS can sell em as fast as they make em I think they'll be happy.

Time for hype

I don't believe that PS3 or 360 had weeks quite as bad as WiiU is having, but I do agree that the new console's sales will drop hard after the holidays. They too will probably not face the lows of WiiU, however, due to 3rd parties keeping such a horrible drought without new games from happening. Still, depending on how expensive they are or if the market takes to one over the other early on, you never know.

That said, if Nintendo does indeed right the ship this E3/holiday with WiiU, I don't think its post-holiday drop will be nearly as bad next year, and I wouldn't expect their sales to be as low as they've been lately ever again until the end of the console's life.

The flaw in the logic here is that typically the first quarter of the year is frequently (software wise) a bad time of the year. The few good games don't get the attention that a good game in the fall would get. The exception has typically been Microsoft with Gears of War.

Later in the Spring to early Summer, there are often some bigger games that appear and they will drive sales typically through the Summer. With a few solid games being released in the Summer. Then the big fall push happens.

The first year is typically tough because of the lack of games for any gaming system. However, once that first year passes buyers will look at the library of games to determine if the console is worth purchasing.

This is why I'm not worried about the Wii U yet. If this Autumn/Winter things don't improve than Nintendo has something to fret about.

It isn´t just if the consoles have a high price (+400), both consoles consoles will be released at the same, fighting for the same market with pratically the same library of games for a long time.
The market that buys consoles at high prices is small and having to share that market from the get go between two consoles won`t be good for neither Sony or MS.
It will be a while before gamers can buy both consoles. Prices will need to go down and libraries be diversified enough to make a new purchase worth it.

I don`t think things will be as bad as with Wii U, but in a new scenario, i won`t rule out that chance.
