I have a feeling that it will be expensive, more expensive than most consoles at launch.

Typical Gaben move, go out to dinner, order everything then leave out the backdoor.

what's funny about "work with Sony"?
Mind you, if sony games ever go pc, it will be on steam. No question about it. They've been close recently.

Nintendo might have something to say about working with Sony. However, both parties basically tried to fuck each other over so no wonder that didn't work out.

But they did just work with Sony in 2011, and on top of it, was amicable. The Gaben even went on stage praising ps3, and Playstation.
I believe PS+ was even greatly influenced by Steam, and wouldn't be surprised to see more collaborative work between the two in the future.

Kickstarter has never raised anything close to the budget of an actual game, never mind a hardware project. |

I am not worried about Steambox whatsoever. All I know is I want one. Gabe is more knowledgeable than any of us.
*I wont play WOW on a tablet especially memorizing all the 20+ keybindings.

Well, let's see. The VHS/Betamax war, the Blu-ray vs HD DVD war, stating 'Forrest Gump' didn't make any money so they didn’t have to pay people, 'losing' that very important FAX about Godzilla from Toho, getting caught making fake movie reviews, , etc., etc. Sony isn't the easiest company to cooperate.
Still, they aren't Apple, who licensed 3rd party manufactures, then turn around and sued them right before launching. But Sony likes to shot themselves in he figuratively foot, and flack creates collateral damage.
If Steam and Sony work together, it’s because Sony needs Steam, not the other way around.
I'm not saying it hasn't raised money. I'm saying that modern game budgets are very much higher than the $1-4m a Kickstarter can raise, and that the games you see are either cutting corners (being a 90s isometric RPG definitely helps), have alternative sources of funding (such as post-release sales or VC funding) in which case Kickstarter is more of a publicity tool or capital investment test case.
A Valve hardware project will be $50m easily. Which itself is far cheaper than say a PS4, but still very much out of reach of a Kickstarter.
Ouya's a plastic box with a prebuilt ARM SoC. Even then I very much doubt the thing can be done on $8m alone. They are expecting post release sales of a few times that I'm sure.
